Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany has shrugged off reports suggesting he won’t be available for the Manchester derby. The Manchester City captain is hopeful of making a full recovery after the international break.
The 27-year-old Belgium international suffered a groin injury in the 4-0 victory over Newcastle United on the opening day of the Premier League. The center-back has been sidelined ever since, but is expected to return to health after Belgium’s World Cup qualifier match against Scotland.
Meanwhile, Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini admits the skipper could still be sidelined for a month. However, Kompany believes he will return to action before Manchester City dwell into their Champions League campaign.
Manchester City will begin their Champions League campaign on either September 17 or 18. The Eastlands will meet Manchester United for their first derby of the season of September 22.
“I’ll be out for a little while, but not too long,” Kompany told Manchester City’s official website. “I may miss the internationals, but I hope to be back after that.
“I’ve been here before and I’m going to work hard to get back as quickly as possible. There are worse things that can happen, but the only disappointment is that the season began so positively for me and everything went really well during pre-season.
“There is a protocol to follow with any injury, and there is a timescale that goes with that. If I follow that schedule, I know when I’ll be back in a certain amount of weeks, and possibly sooner.”
Manchester City severely felt the absence of their charismatic skipper and stalwart defender in the 3-2 defeat to Cardiff City on Sunday. Manchester City will be hoping to make a comeback against Hull City this weekend.
Kompany missed two months of intense action last season as well, but because of a calf injury. Kompany insists that his latest injury cannot be hold against him as reason for him being prone to injuries.
“It is a freak injury that has nothing to do with the previous problems -- it can happen -- but I know that when I return I’ll be absolutely fine,” Kompany added.
