Man City striker Edin Dzeko receives praise from both ends following winner of Spurs
Edin Dzeko provided Manchester City with the winning goal once again after being called on the field from the bench. The 26-year-old Bosnia and Herzegovina forward replaced Carlos Tevez to score just before the final whistle, which allowed Manchester City to celebrate a 2-1 comeback victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday night.
Tottenham defender Steven Caulker stunned Manchester City with a header in the first half of the game. Sergio Aguero leveled the game with superb strike in the 65th minute strike. Edin Dzeko became Manchester City’s savior once again when he scored in the 88th minute to the Eastlands record an important win in the Premier League.
Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas compared Edin Dzeko’s heroics to the Manchester United forward Javier Hernandez. The Mexican international was the epicenter of Manchester United’s three-goal comeback against Aston Villa on Saturday night.
“If there is a comparable situation to this one, it is Javier Hernandez yesterday,” Andre Villas-Boas said. “In the last three games he has scored six times. He has come on and made a difference.
“Today, Dzeko made the difference with the ambition to show he deserves to be in the final XI. It was an individual moment of brilliance, which is recurrent for a player who continues to be on the bench but continues to come on to destroy the opposition.”
Interestingly, Manchester City and Manchester United have recorded a quite a few comeback victories this season. Manchester City has come from behind to win four times this season. Amazingly, Manchester United has done the same eight times this season.
Anyway, Manchester City’s victory extended Roberto Mancini’s unbeaten home record to 35 games, which is quite exceptional for the inconsistent team.
“We are not playing to answer questions,” said Manchester City coach David Platt. “We are playing to win football matches. That is what our focus is. We don't get motivated because people want to say things outside our camp. There is a football match to win that gets us three points.”
David Platt understands Edin Dzeko’s frustration at being left out of Manchester City’s first team. With Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero starring in Manchester City’s attack, Mario Balotelli couldn’t even enter the squad list for the match. David Platt wants Edin Dzeko to continue playing at his highest level even if he comes off the bench.
“We can only pick 11 players,” David Platt said. “We have a lot of players who would play in almost any other Premier League team. Edin is one of those players. We felt we needed an injection. We needed a little bit more height to get a platform to hold the ball up.
“We also know he is a goal threat and he is fresh. He has scored lots of goals this season and since he has been here he has scored some heavy goals.”
