Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed he decided to scrap his pre-match team selection after Manchester City’s shock 3-1 defeat to Southampton. The Manchester United manager revealed he decided to make a run for the Premier League title after archrivals after the Eastlands bowed down to the Saints.
The Old Trafford boss made seven changes to his squad in Manchester United’s 2-0 victory over Everton. Manchester United veteran Ryan Giggs drew first blood in the 13th minute which was followed by a goal from the club’s leading goal-scorer Robin van Persie.
Manchester City’s defeat has allowed Manchester United a 12-point lead on top of the Premier League table. Seeing his team had gained an advantage, Sir Alex Ferguson decided to act upon his rotation policy by calling in players from the bench.
The move also allowed Sir Alex Ferguson’s star players to rest before Manchester United’s mega-clash against Real Madrid. Manchester United will travel to meet the La Liga champions at Santiago Bernabeu for the first leg of the round of 16 Champions League match.
“As soon as I saw the result at Southampton I thought this was an opportunity for us to get a real comfortable lead,” Sir Alex Ferguson said after the match.  “I scrapped the changes I originally planned to make.
“I was going to make about seven changes but it was about being realistic.
“We knew if we could get a result then it put us in a fantastic position and we can make changes later on in the season.”
Manchester United’s triumph over Everton comes after the latter grabbed a pulsating 4-4 comeback-draw at Old Trafford last season. The draw blew open the title race last season, which consequently allowed archrivals Manchester City to win the Premier League crown on goal difference and that too in the dying moments of season.
Sir Alex Ferguson and Co. will now turn their attention towards grabbing the Champions League trophy. Manchester United has an edge over Real Madrid since the second leg of the Round of 16 match is being held at Old Trafford.
