Man Utd missed the services of Robin van Persie in project demolition derby
Was it simply a dull day for Manchester United or were Manchester City solely responsible for project demolition derby? Both scenarios could be correct, but what’s certain is that Manchester United desperately missed the services of their star striker Robin van Persie.
The Dutchman, who was the top goal scorer in the Premier League last season, was ruled out of the Manchester derby just before the game started. Later, it was revealed that Robin van Persie was benched because of a groin injury.
The injury is not believed to be a serious one, but the absence did cost Manchester United potential goals. Sergio Kun Aguero grabbed a brace along with Yaya Toure and Samir Nasri grabbing a goal apiece.
Manchester United grabbed a consolation goal from a free-kick later in the game. Wayne Rooney converted the free-kick into a goal, but it proved to be nothing more than a consolation prize.
Manchester United manager David Moyes was disappointed to see Robin van Persie on the bench before the game. Moyes confirmed that the striker was set for an early recovery as the injury was believed to be a short-term one.
“Obviously you miss Robin van Persie,” Moyes told Sky Sports . “He is a huge miss to anyone. I don’t think it is going to be long. He just felt something in his groin in training. We didn’t want to aggravate it.”
Moyes reserved special praise for Rooney’s impressive form as well. The coveted English striker has been in phenomenal form since returning from his head injury. Moyes believes if Rooney had a partner in the attack, perhaps the result could have been different.
“I would say Wayne Rooney's performance today was outstanding. He certainly didn't deserve to be on the losing team, he was first-class,” Moyes said.
Manchester United have acquired only seven points from their first five Premier League games. The Red Devils haven’t been able grab a win over big teams in the league. Moyes and Co. were defeated by Liverpool then drew with Chelsea and were then thrashed by Manchester City.
Moyes did take the opportunity to complain about Manchester United’s unfair fixture schedule. The Old Trafford believes Manchester United have been handed an irregular schedule.
“We did say it was a difficult start, didn't we? I said at the time, the way the balls came out of the Premier League bag, I wasn't convinced... and I'm still not,” Moyes said.
