Man Utd parked the bus in front of a toothless Real Madrid, Mourinho
Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has accused Sir Alex Ferguson of parking the bus to escape with a 1-1 draw at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday night. Jose Mourinho admits Manchester United played well, but Real Madrid could have defeated them had the midfield and defense been a bit more open.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored the equalizer after Danny Welbeck drew first blood for Manchester United. Manchester United bolstered their defense after the goal and didn’t let their former star Cristiano Ronaldo strike another goal till the game ended.
“They came here to defend and not to concede goals or space. They didn’t play to win,” Jose Mourinho snapped when he was asked to comment on Manchester United’s strategy. “We have players of great potential and we can score goals. I don’t feel pressure. At Old Trafford we have the perfect conditions to win.”
Manchester United’s 22-year-old goalkeeper David de Gea was the man-of-the-match for many fans. The Spanish shot-stopper denied Real Madrid a couple of sure-shot goals. Sir Alex Ferguson wasn’t convinced about putting David de Gea between the sticks before the match, but the Scotsman was glad he made that decision.
“David was excellent and produced three or four really top saves,” Sir Alex Ferguson said. “He’s improving all the time. I’m pleased for the boy. This is a difficult place to come and we would have taken 1-1 before the game.”
“The tie is 50-50 and I would say whoever scores first in three weeks’ time will have a good chance of going through. We made chances and hopefully we won’t regret missing them.
“Real are a fantastic counter-attacking team, but we will be more positive in terms of selection. We have goals in our team, don’t forget that.”
Real Madrid were playing at home and piling pressure on Manchester United, yet it was the English side who created the best goalscoring chances in the game. Robin van Persie came within inches of scoring twice in the second half and Ryan Giggs was given a match-winning opportunity from 10 yards.
The second leg of Manchester United versus Real Madrid should be just as entertaining as the first. Both sides are expected to score goals even though Manchester United will be the ones who put on the pressure now.
