Man Utd take revenge on Man City with 20th Premier League title Michael Carrick
Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick claims the 20th Premier League title is quite exceptional for a number of reasons, but perhaps the most important is that it was grabbed from their archrivals Manchester City.
Michael Carrick admits that the title winning celebrations came along with a unique sense of excitement, since 20th Premier League title acted as an act of revenge against Manchester City, who stole the Premier League title away from Manchester United in the final moments of last season.
Meanwhile, Michael Carrick is enjoying arguably his best season at Manchester United. The England international has been nominated for the PFA Player of the Year award, along with teammate Robin van Persie.
Monday was a big day for Manchester United supporters as the Red Devils defeated Aston Villa 3-0 to lift the league title for the 20th time in history. It was a big moment for Sir Alex Ferguson and Co. after last year’s dramatic last-minute misfortune.
Manchester United lost the Premier League title on goal-difference to Manchester City, thanks to Sergio Aguero’s injury-time goal against Queens Park Rangers. The goal occurred quite literally in the final moments of the season.
Michael Carrick reckons such disappointment could see teams spiral downwards, but Manchester United showed resolve and bounced back for more glory.
“It is an incredible achievement,” Michael Carrick said. “Every year we win, it just gets more special. The sense of achievement gets greater, for the manager and the club.
“This was a special one this year, [because of] the way we ended last year. We could have gone two ways and let it affect us and faded away. But we bounced back. We are proud of all the lads for showing their character.
“We were written off at the start of the season, as we are most seasons, but we have managed to come out on top. It is a special feeling.”
Michael Carrick reserved special praise for Manchester United veteran Ryan Giggs and manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
“It is sensational that he is still able to do that after all this time. It is not just physical, it is mental - having the drive and desire to do it every day,” Michael Carrick added. “The standard he has set is unbelievable. He is a legend. It is a throwaway comment too often, but it is a pleasure to play with him and work with him every day.”
Michael Carrick also had words of praise for Robin van Persie, who scored a brilliant hat-trick in the 3-0 title-winning victory over Aston Villa.
“The finish was textbook. There are not many people who can do that,” Michael Carrick said. “He has had a terrific season. It is his first one here and, if he carries on like this, he will have a good career, that's for certain.”
