Manchester City have become the frontrunners to sign in Napoli’s world class striker Edinson Cavani. The Uruguayan international could be headed to towards the Eastlands next summer, according to Edinson Cavani’s agent.

The 25-year-old striker, who scored a brace against Manchester City last season, has a release clause worth £51 million. Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has been questioning Napoli over the possibility to sign in Edinson Cavani for over a year now, although Serie A outfit is reluctant to lose the services of their coveted striker.

Edinson Cavani’s agent Mino Raiola, who happens to be the representative for a dozen other football icons as well, insists Edinson Cavani will remain at Napoli till the end of the season. Mino Raiola claims Edinson Cavani wanted stay at Napoli till the end of the season, but widespread interest from top notch European clubs had the player pondering over a big-money move.

Edinson Cavani has been on the radar of clubs like Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich since the striker moved to Napoli in 2010. With an impressive tally of 88 goals in 117 appearances, Edinson Cavani is considered to be one of the hottest transfer prospects in the football market.

“For now Cavani will stay but I wouldn't be so sure about that once June arrives,” Mino Raiola said. “I'm sure there are clubs ready to pay [the release fee]. But only five clubs in the world can afford to do that - Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester City, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain.

“You are intelligent enough on your own to understand where Cavani will play his football next season.”

Roberto Mancini will have to sell one of his current strikers in order to sign in Edinson Cavani. The financial restrictions on the Premier League champions restrict them from spending freely in the transfer window.

Manchester City has also been linked with transfer interest in Atletico Madrid star Radamel Falcao, but Chelsea are leading the race for his signature. Reportedly, the Chelsea has already inked a gentleman’s agreement with the Colombian striker which will ensure a summer move.
