Manchester United lose top EPL spot after shock defeat to Norwich City
Manchester United’s joy of becoming the English Premier League leaders was short-lived due to a 1-0 defeat to Norwich City at Carrow Road on Saturday night. The Old Trafford boss Sir Alex Ferguson was understandably disappointed with his squad for handing in another distasteful performance.
The Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson praised Chris Hughton and Co. for a well-deserved victory and admitted that Manchester United seemed unfocused throughout the game.
“We're disappointed to lose the game but we have to give credit to Norwich for the way they fought and battled for every ball on the pitch. They defended fantastically well and the goalkeeper also had a really good night so it's disappointing,” Sir Alex Ferguson said in his post-match interview.
With this victory Norwich City are now placed 13th in the English Premier League. The Canaries have scored 14 points from 12 games. The lone goal of the game came through a powerful header from Anthony Pilkington following a perfect cross from the left wing by Javier Garrido.
“It was a marvelous cross and a marvelous touch for their goal so our goalkeeper could do nothing about that. They deserved the win just because they worked so hard for it. The players are used to making comebacks and we're always a threat in the last minutes of matches. We had a lot of half-chances but it just wasn't our night,” Sir Alex Ferguson added.
Manchester United seemed lost in the midfield without Wayne Rooney. The England international was also omitted from Roy Hodgson’s squad due to an injury. Sir Alex Ferguson hopes Wayne Rooney will be fit for the Champions League trip to Turkey where Manchester United will play against Galatasaray.
Sir Alex Ferguson opted to bench Manchester United’s top goal scorer Robin van Persie against Norwich City. The Dutchman, who is suffering from an ankle injury, came off the bench later in the game, but was unable to inspire Manchester United to another comeback victory.
This defeat means Manchester United drop to second-place and a point behind the archrivals Manchester City, who also happen to be the current English Premier League champions. Manchester City won their game earlier on the same night with a 5-0 score-line against Aston Villa.
Chelsea also dropped points in the night. The Champions League winners had to face an embarrassing 2-1 defeat at the hands of West Bromwich Albion. This latest setback in their run of for the English Premier League title leaves them third-placed with 24 points.
