Manchester United have swooped in for Chelsea’s transfer target James Rodriguez. The Champions League winning side look set to lose out on their Porto winger, although they were ready to table a huge bid for when the January transfer window opened.
James Rodriguez had been on Chelsea’s radar for a while now, however, given their recent slump in form and restrictions because of financial fair play Manchester United have become favorites to acquire the services of Colombian star.
The out of favor Portuguese winger Nani is set for an imminent move out of Old Trafford this fall. The Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is keen on replacing the winger with a new blood. James Rodriguez, who is seen by many as the one of the most talented youngsters in Europe, has turned into the apple of Sir Alex Ferguson’s eye in the past couple of weeks.
Reportedly, Manchester United have sent a number scouts to see the 21-year-old perform for Porto. A delegation from Chelsea was sent earlier last month to seal a gentleman’s deal for James Rodriguez, but interest from rivaling club broke down talks at the table.
The Colombia international is considered to be a coveted asset at Porto, which is why chairman Pinto da Costa is unwilling to accept any offers for James Rodriguez during the January transfer window.
“When the time comes to contact with me will know that not seeing,” Pinto da Costa told Portuguese newspaper A Bola. “I will not let anyone leave. If the FC Porto is a title shot and is in the knockout round of the Champions League, why would I sell a player?”
Chelsea’s star struck midfield and wings are filled up with talented players such as Eden Hazard, Juan Mata, Oscar, Marko Marin, Victor Moses and Daniel Sturridge. Signing in James Rodriguez might further upset the already upset form of Chelsea.
On the other hand, Sir Alex Ferguson is in actual need of a talented winger. The Scotsman usually fields a formation with strong plays from the wings, which is why he has Antonio Valencia, Ashley Young and Shinji Kagawa in squad. In case of injury Sir Alex Ferguson is forced to deploy Danny Welbeck, Ryan Giggs or Wayne Rooney on the wings.
Given that Manchester United are on top of the English Premier League table, can go deep into the Champions League and make a big bid with the funds they receive after Nani’s sale they are realistically favorites for the signature of James Rodriguez.
