Manchester United to battle Barcelona for the rights to Borussia Dortmund star Mats Hummels
Sir Alex Ferguson will focus on fixing Manchester United’s leaky defensive-line during the winter transfer window. The Old Trafford boss has already set sights on a couple of players as recruitments. Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels is the biggest player on his transfer list.
The Manchester United manager is an avid fan of the 23-year-old Germany international, Mats Hummels. Reportedly, Manchester United brass are lining up a move for the center back, which means they will have to rival up with Barcelona in pursuit of Mats Hummels.
Mats Hummels has been the backbone of Jurgen Klopp’s defense during the past couple of seasons. Jurgen Klopp won’t be willing to part from Mats Hummels and the young German himself is hesitant to make an away move.
In spite of massive interest from Manchester United, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, Mats Hummels pledged loyalty to Borussia Dortmund over the summers. The German star inked an extension contract with the Bundesliga giants and declared that he had no intentions of making a switch any time soon.
However, Borussia Dortmund’s form in the Bundesliga has been suffering lately. Borussia Dortmund are 11 points behind the league toppers Bayern Munich. With little chance of acquiring Champions League glory, Mats Hummels will certainly ponder over an away move this fall.
Manchester United’s defense has been plagued by an injury crisis, which is good news for Mats Hummels as he will be immediately called into the first team. Phil Jones and Chris Smalling might take another month before regularly appearing the first team and Manchester United’s official captain Nemanja Vidic’s return will take at least two more months.
The aging Rio Ferdinand and inconsistent Jonny Evans have paired up as the only defenders in Manchester United’s defense. Reportedly, Sir Alex Ferguson is keen on finding replacements this fall.
Barcelona’s defense is also devoid of defenders. Carles Puyol and Gerard Pique are the only well established defenders in their defensive-line. Barcelona’s new manager Tito Vilanova is already at the table persuading Borussia Dortmund to negotiate a deal for Mats Hummels.
According to latest reports, Mats Hummels can be fetched for £20 million, which is a sum Manchester United and Barcelona will be ready to put on the table in a heartbeat.
