Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini claims he is surprised to see Manchester United decline so quickly. The Chilean tactician admits he didn’t expect the club to plummet to such a decline after the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson.
Manuel Pellegrini’s side will march to Old Trafford 12 points ahead of their rivals. Manchester United, who are seventh on the Premier League table, have little hope of defeating Manchester City in the derby on Tuesday.
Manchester City defeated Manchester United 4-1 at the Etihad Stadium earlier in September. The former Real Madrid manager confesses he expected Manchester United to be at least in the top three this season.
Pellegrini claims he is stunned to see Manchester United drop their form so quickly. Nonetheless, Pellegrini still recognized their archrivals as a threat to be dealt with.
“All the other clubs expected United would be in the first positions in the table. For different reasons at this reason they are not but they continue to be a difficult team,” Pellegrini said.
The transition between Sir Alex Ferguson and the club’s new manager David Moyes appears to be the primary reason behind the decline. Moyes hasn’t been able to truly settle down since taking over charge from the man who has been in charge of Manchester United since 1986.
Pellegrini felt sympathetic towards Moyes, who has been under the gun for a long time now. Pellegrini claimed he understand it is very hard to settle down after a manager who has led the club for such a long time.
“It is difficult because [for] so many years, the same person manages a team and with new ideas. It is difficult to analyze not knowing it from the inside. But it would always be difficult to replace Alex Ferguson,” Pellegrini said.
Pellegrini also explained the comments he made back in February, when he said that Manchester City were a bigger club than Manchester United as of now. Pellegrini explained that since Manchester City had already won silverware and were challenging for more; his side was in a better position than Manchester United.
“I meant in this season, the best team is Manchester City because we are at the top of the table -- but at the same moment I said we must recognize what Manchester United have done in the last 20 years,” Pellegrini said.
