Mancini predicts mouthwatering Man City & Man Utd derby following CL exit
Roberto Mancini saw the silver lining in Manchester City’s Champions League exit to suggest that the Premier League champions will concentrate on defending their title now. A 1-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in the final Champions League game of the Group Stages means Manchester City have also failed to qualify for Europa League.
The boss of Eastlands Roberto Mancini insists he was disappointed to have missed out on Europa League, however, his early exit from Europe means Manchester City will have more time to concentrate on winning the English Premier League.
It was disappointing to Manchester City under perform in Champions League for the second successive season. Fate placed them in the Group of Death for two successive seasons, still Manchester City’s under par performance was quite apparent.
“We are not in the Europa League and for this we are disappointed,” Roberto Mancini told Sky Sports after the game. “Last season we did better. This year we had a very difficult group and if you make a mistake in the first games, it's difficult.
“Clearly it's better for the Premier League because we don't play in the Europa League, but we wanted to play in the Europa League, that was our target tonight.”
Manchester City managed to acquire only three points from their six games in the Group Stage. Lack of goals was one the major reason for Manchester City’s early exit from the Champions League. Roberto Mancini is of the belief that if his strikers had scored goals regularly Manchester City would have qualified for the Knockout Stage easily.
“Tonight we tried but we were missing players. We tried to score but if you don't score it is difficult to win,” Roberto Mancini said. “We wanted this, but to win we need to score. We had a chance, but we didn't. If you don't score it's difficult.”
The Italian, who led Manchester City to a memorable FA Cup victory two seasons ago, needs to raise team spirit for a showdown with their bitter-rivals from across town, Manchester United. Roberto Mancini and Co. are scheduled to host the Manchester derby this Sunday.
“We will recover some players for Sunday, it will be a different game,” Roberto Mancini added.
An injury plagued Manchester United squad will travel to the Etihad Stadium with hopes of defending their three-point lead on top of the table. In case Manchester City defeats Manchester United, Roberto Mancini will gain bragging rights of victory as his side will top the Premier League on better goal difference.
