All it took was two weeks for us to get our first "Manny being Manny" moment in LA. And this one was quite special. During the top of the ninth of last night's game against the Phillies, the game was delayed several minutes because the Dodgers had no left fielder. The umps were trying to figure what the Dodgers were doing so that they wouldn't have to play with 8 men on the field.
Of course, the Dodgers had no clue what the hell was happening either.
And then, like a bolt of lightning, out of the dugout sprinted Manny Ramirez, tucking in his shirt and trying to fix his belt.
So what happened? Uh, good question. Joe Torre said Manny
inadvertently mistook a signal given to him in praise of his 8th inning single as a cue that a defensive replacement would come in for him in the ninth. Normally a manager
TELLS YOU they're bringing in a defensive replacement for you, but whatever. By the way, Manny claimed he was taking a leak. Good to see everyone's stories match up so well. If this were a murder investigation, Torre and Manny would already be on the lethal injection table.
Just classic. And if you remember Manny's last few weeks with the Red Sox, he seems to play according to his own schedule. I swear it wouldn't surprise me if he left a game in the middle of the 5th inning to grab a beer at this point in time. That's about the only thing he hasn't done yet.
By the way, I'm sure Torre couldn't be happier with his new right fielder.
