I've always been a huge Manny Ramirez fan, but after this story broke late yesterday, maybe I'll be changing my mind. Just a few days after Astros player Shawn Chacon pretty much ended his career by wailing on GM Ed Wade in the Astros clubhouse, Manny Ramirez decided to give Chacon a run for his money in the Astros' visiting locker room.
From the Providence Journal:
Manny Ramirez shoved Red Sox traveling secretary Jack McCormick to the ground in an argument over Ramirez' ticket allotment. Several onlookers moved quickly to separate the two. Ramirez had asked McCormick for 16 tickets for Saturday night's Red Sox-Astros game, an unusually high number for day-of-game. In addition to handling all travel details for clubs, traveling secretaries also take player ticket requests for both home and away games. They supposedly made up later, and Ramirez won't even be punished. See, what I want to know is why in the hell did Ramirez need 16 tickets? Dude was born in the Dominican Republic and grew up in New York. Who in God's name does he know in Texas? You know what, I shouldn't even ask.
When McCormick cautioned Ramirez that he might not be able to fulfill his request, Ramirez responded by shouting: "Just do your job!" An argument ensued and Ramirez pushed McCormick, sending him to the ground.
Anyway, some people may be wondering why the Red Sox aren't punishing him on anywhere near the same level that the Astros did with Chacon (who was released). Even though what Chacon did was worse, both were somewhat serious transgressions.
Well, I'll tell you why Manny's not getting in trouble. It's pretty simple.
Manny Ramirez = Hall of Famer
Shawn Chacon = Scrub pitcher
Frankly, Ramirez probably could have beaten McCormick with a bat and the Sox wouldn't have done anything. Well that's not totally true, they would have had to hide the body. But that's all.
And who knows, maybe McCormick is a regular Constanza. In which case, I fully support a beating.
