So much for this being a boring trade deadline. Doesn't that seem to always be the case, when expectations are large, we get nothing. Yesterday morning, we assumed all the big names were behind us. Not so much.
Ken Griffey Jr. has already been traded (pending his approval) to the Chicago White Sox, a move that has caught most by surprise, even though though the two teams have talked about this for years.
Now our attention turns to Manny Ramirez. 24 hours ago I put the chances of a trade at 0 percent. This morning, I'll put it above 50 percent. Not helping matters are Manny's comments made to ESPN Deportes yesterday.
"They haven't asked me for anything.I don't see any reason the Red Sox would put up with this talk and indifference on the field any longer. The only reason a deal doesn't get made is a lack of time.
The Red Sox don't deserve a player like me. During my years here I've seen how they [the Red Sox] have mistreated other great players when they didn't want them to try to turn the fans against them.
The Red Sox did the same with guys like Nomar Garciaparra and Pedro Martinez, and now they do the same with me. Their goal is to paint me as the bad guy. I love Boston fans, but the Red Sox don't deserve me. I'm not talking about money. Mental peace has no price and I don't have peace here."
The most discussed move is a three-way deal with the Florida Marlins and Pittsburgh Pirates. Jason Bay would head to Boston, Jeremy Hermida to Pittsburgh and Manny down to Florida with several other minor names involved.
As you might suspect, each team probably has their doubts about whether that's the right move. An excited move from the fans perspective, no doubt. Hermida is a big bat, but Ramirez' would likely start caring again and potentially drive the Marlins into the playoffs.
