Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams march on to the US Open semifinals
Maria Sharapova had to fight against Mother Nature and a determined opponent to reach the semifinal stage of the US Open. New York’s weather challenged Maria Sharapova as the Russian star set out to play against Marion Bartoli.
Rain broke down on Tuesday to stop the match between Maria Sharapova and Marion Bartoli. At the time the Frenchwoman was leading the proceedings with 4-0 in the first set.
The match started late on Wednesday, but soon enough the game got heated. Maria Sharapova failed to overturn her deficit which helped Marion Bartoli to claim the first set.
However, Maria Sharapova found back her form in the subsequent sets. At the end of the day Maria Sharapova was boasting about a 3-6 6-3 6-4 victory.
The victory helped Maria Sharapova to improve her 2012 record. Maria Sharapova is now 12-0 in three-set matches in 2012. Maria Sharapova will now be playing against the world number one Victoria Azarenka in the semifinals of the US Open.
The other semifinal of the US Open will take place between Serena Williams and Sara Errani. Both of them got easy straight-set victories in the respective matches on Wednesday.
Serena Williams, who demolished Andrea Hlavackova 6-0 6-0 in the round of 16, started of strongly against Ana Ivanovic to wrap up the first set in just 25 minutes.
Ana Ivanovic fought harder in the second set, which forced Serena Williams to utilize her brutal forehands. At the end of the day the American gold medalist was just too strong for Ana Ivanovic. Serena Williams won the match with a 6-1 6-3.
Sara Errani recorded an impressive performance as well. She completely thrashed her opponent Roberta Vinci. The world no. 10 knocked the ball around and waited for her opponent to make mistakes.
Near to the end of the game she changed tactics and started playing aggressively. By the Roberta Vinci has lost all of her confidence, which meant and easy 6-2 6-4 victory for Sara Errani.
Sara Errani was defeated by Maria Sharapova at the French Open earlier this year. She will have to beat Serena Williams for the first time in her career if she wants to reach her second Grand Slam final of 2012.
On the other hand, Serena Williams has won all of her three encounters against Sara Errani. Nonetheless, Sara Errani’s new found form will make the match very interesting.
