Maria Sharapova grabbed a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Melina Czink in the first round of the US Open yesterday. The victory also helped Maria Sharapova prove her fitness levels to critics suggesting the Russian star was physically unfit to compete in the US Open.
The fitness concerns surrounding Maria Sharapova were highlighted by media after the World No. 3 missed a couple of warm-up sessions prior to the beginning of the US Open. Maria Sharapova hasn’t been sighted since she lost the Olympic final in London this year.
Nonetheless, Maria Sharapova’s return to the court showed that the legendary women’s tennis player was in top notch form for the final grand slam of the year.
Melina Czink, who was making her US Open debut, was unable to handle Maria Sharapova from the back of the court. The Hungarian fought valiantly but she knew Maria Sharapova had too much firepower against her.
Melina Czink made a strong start against Maria Sharapova. She matched her for four games before Maria Sharapova decided to step up things and narrated a one-sided story in the remaining of the opening set.
After an emphatic victory in the first set Maria Sharapova prepared to claim the second set, but she was stunned by Melina Czink’s resolute will to win. Melina Czink worked out a break on her own to record a comeback.
Nonetheless, Maria Sharapova calmly regained composure to win the rest of the game with relative ease.
The 25-year-old was struggling with movement around the court. However, whenever Maria Sharapova was asked to chase a ball around the court she was found in excellent form. Tracking back also created some problems from Maria Sharapova, but when push comes to shove the Russian was always present with an impressive return.
At the end of the day Melina Czink was left with a look of shocked admiration on her face. It appeared as if Melina Czink had no regrets about being schooled by one of the best women tennis players in the world.
Truth be told, playing against Maria Sharapova at the US Open will be an encounter Melina Czink will not forget easily.
