Marian Hossa Agrees To One Year Deal With Detroit

If You Can't Beat Them, Join Them. Marian Hossa To The Red Wings
by rootman54

According to reports from TSN in Canada, Slovakian Winger Marian Hossa has decided to join the Detroit Red Wings. Just a month after being knocked out of the Stanley Cup Finals by the Red Wings, Hossa has agreed to a one year $7.4 million deal with Detroit.

Hossa, who is 29, scored 29 goals and 37 assists last season while playing for the Atlanta Thrashers and Pittsburgh Penguins. During the playoffs, Hossa recorded 26 points in just 20 games as the Penguins made it to the Stanley Cup Finals.

The $7.4 million is the most the Red Wings were willing to offer any player in hockey right now because GM Ken Holland believes no one should be paid more than six time Norris Trophy Winner Nicklas Lidstrom.

Hossa was one of the most coveted players in the league heading into free agency and his move to the Red Wings only makes the rich that much richer. Don't be surprised in the least to see the Red Wings repeat as Stanley Cup champions next season.

Something about this just seems wrong...doesn't the NHL have a salary cap?

Yeah they do. But I agree with you, this is ridiculous. It's like the Celtics signing Baron Davis or something close to that. Just absurd.

As a Wings fan I want to jump up and down and have the season start tomorrow.  I don't know how Kenny Holland did it but at least this leaves room next year to resign Zetterberg.

If Franzen keeps playing like he did, the Wings could have two of the best lines in the entire league with

Zetterberg - Datsyuk - Holmstrom &

Hossa - Franzen - Hudler/Filppula

I better not count my chickens before they hatch though...But it does seem like the Wings of old and the huge payrolls.

Hossa...getting paid $7.4M to play on the SECOND line? Doesn't seem right...

And the Wings are cutting it close with this salary...In fact, I think they might be over the $56M cap- http://www.nhlnumbers.com/overview.php?team=DET&season=0809

They are up to about $53.5M right now without adding Hossa, and Hossa brings that up to $60.9M. The Wings will have to move someone before the deadline for being over the cap, if these calculations are correct

I am shocked that he went to the Wings

I wouldnt be surprised if they cut ties with someone.  I just looked at their roster and its rediculous how many young players have to go back to the minors.

Nevermind, I goofed up, Hossa is the first player on that list LOL. It's amazing how Detroit is getting away with having all of these star players and still being under the cap.

I honestly wish the Rangers could manage a team as well as the Wings

Absurd and BEAUTIFUL.

I assume Hossa will take 38 year-old Dallas Drake's spot on the roster.  The Wings just added more speed and skill to their top-two lines.  I'm very excited for the new season!

This guy took the best of both worlds.  He took less money for one year to win a cup only to make more money next year if he doesn't.  He could have had a long term deal with the Pens at the same rate.
