Dear Bud Selig, Please let this happen. I'm willing to be selfish and forgive you for playing me as a fool during this steroid era. All will be forgiven.
Sincerely,
Desperate Cubs fan
Great news for Northsiders this morning regarding a sliver of hope for new management (Thanks to Fless for the newslink earlier):
Controversial Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said Thursday that he has submitted his application to purchase the Cubs. He said he believed he sent it in last week, though he wasn't sure. Dates don't matter anyway. What matters is that he's officially serious about buying the valuable, championship-starved franchise on the North Side.Mark Cuban rubs me the wrong way often (see: Suing Nellie for kicking his ass), but he's also everything, well most everything, you'd want in an owner. Passionate and determined to do whatever it takes to win. That would be a completely new philosophy for the Chicago Cubs organization where the MO is merely to keep us pathetic fans entertained just enough so that we drink up all the Wrigley Beer and stay interested at least into September. The Cubs would regularly contend with a Cuban-led ownership, this much is certain.
For those Cubs fans who are excited about the possibility of a free-spending owner taking over their beloved team, the news that Cuban formally has taken the first step in the bid process is huge.
But it's hard to shake the image of Commissioner Bud Selig holding Cuban's application by his thumb and index finger, and at arm's length, as if he were holding a rat by the tail. That's probably unfair to Cuban, who runs a successful NBA franchise, but it seems to sum up baseball's general estimation of him.
What's not certain -- Bud Selig actually letting this happen. I can understand his conservative concerns, but don't you think Mark Cuban would be perfect for baseball? Do you think Selig would/will approve?
