Mark Teixeira is confident in the Yankees… but should he be?

Mandatory Credit: David Manning-USA TODAY SportsHe only played in 15 games last year, and the Yankees missed the playoffs, but this year Mark Teixeira is confident that both he and the team will come back strong and contend for a playoff spot.

There's reason for optimism, of course, since they've added key players like Jacoby Ellsbury, Brian McCann, Carlos Beltran and Masahiro Tanaka. But they also lost Robinson Cano, Curtis Granderson and Alex Rodriguez.

If their entire team stays healthy and they play to their full potential, it would be no surprise if they were in contention. But Teixeira is looking for more than that:

"We had a great offseason. It was fun to watch. I was texting Cash [Yankees GM Brian Cashman] every two weeks, telling him congrats on another great signing, great offseason. I basically told him, 'You did your job. Now, it is time for us to do ours.' No excuses this year, we have a team that can compete for a world championship."

The Yankees finished 12 games behind the Red Sox last year, in 4th place in the AL East. They were 6 games behind the Rays and Rangers for the final playoff spot in the AL.

Do you think the Yankees have what it takes to compete this year?

Yes, my Yankees definitely have what it takes to compete for the championship. We have a lineup that is complete with both power and speed, a solid rotation and an excellent bullpen. We also have an excellent manager in Joe Girardi. If we can win 85 games with what little we had last year, we should win around 100 this year with all of the additions we made this offseason. I am predicting a Dodgers-Yankees World Series this year. GO YANKEES!!!!!!!!!

lol.
