Blog Photo - Marlins hitting coach Tino Martinez resigns after player abuse allegationsYankees semi-legend Tino Martinez was named hitting coach of the Miami Marlins for 2013. It looked like a tough task given Miami's sell-off and lack of offensive talent outside of Giancarlo Stanton. It would take some good teaching and motivation for Martinez to get something out of the Marlins meager talent.

Today, Martinez resigned after allegations he grabbed a player by the neck a few months ago. Martinez was also allegedly verbally abusing player during spring training. The player he grabbed by the neck apparently was Derek Dietrich, since it was his agent that contacted the team about the incident.

Martinez offered to resign at the time, but Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria would not let him, because apparently there are no Marlins stories that don't involve owner meddling. Now that it's gotten out, Martinez and the team's hand was essentially forced. As we saw with the Mike Rice incident, there is a line that can be crossed by coaches, and if true, grabbing a player's neck would certainly qualify.

I watched the Marlins in spring training and have seen a few of their games on TV this season and my first thought when this story broke on Twitter was... I didn't even know Tino Martinez was the hitting coach of the Marlins.
