California failed to show up for kickoff in College Park, apparently had a tough commute from Galveston Beach, and when they arrived it was one possession too late.
The 9am West Coast kickoff time figured to throw the Bears off but not enough to get knocked out of the Top 25. Maryland ran to a quick 14-0 lead behind two touchdown runs from Da'Rel Scott. The Terrapins extended the lead to a stunning 35-13 lead with 6:22.
That's when Cal figured it would be wise to show up. Kevin Riley, who completed just 33 of 58 passes, threw two touchdowns in the next four minutes, but it was far too late. Perhaps if the Bears had a decent onside kicker, they would have had one more possession, instead all three attempts in the four quarter failed miserably.
Jahvid Best who figured to be in the Heisman race after today, had a rough go of it and puked on the field. No, literally.
First upset of the day, and hopefully more to come. Giddy up.
Maryland 35, California 27
