With the recent passing of Dock Ellis, the pitcher who rode the dragon to a no-hitter in 1970, it only seems appropriate that we have other athletes now admitting to playing under the influence of drugs. Today's athlete to admit he was on drugs while playing is former Broncos left tackle Matt Lepsis, who says he played while high during the first six games of the 2007 season. Lepsis never failed a drug test during his playing days and claims he practiced while high 15 times before actually trying to play a real game while under the influence.
"The first thing I did when I woke up in the morning was get high, and I would try to stay that way all day long," said Lepsis, who won't say what drugs he used.
"I look back on it, and it was really foolish of me," Lepsis said. "There were definitely times when I wasn't even really there. I was physically there, but I was in another place mentally."

I'm not exactly a drug expert, so my guess as to all the drugs Lepsis was on would just be a random guess. But I think we can probably all agree that he was at least smoking tons and tons of pot. Which, when you think about it, is pretty hilarious. There's nothing better than having the guy that's primarily responsible for protecting the QB's blind side to be stoned out of his mind. Suddenly, I think I understand why Jay Cutler had a few problems last year.
Anyway, probably the most interesting aspect of the story is how Lepsis never failed a drug test, which naturally suggests that the NFL isn't exactly as tough with its testing as it says it is. Although, I guess that's hardly news, considering most people think three-quarters of the league is on either steroids, weed, or some combination of the two.
Of course, Lepsis found God after retiring and is now at a theology school in Dallas, blah blah blah. And meanwhile, Jay Cutler is going to the Pro Bowl this year. So I guess things worked out well for everyone in the end. Although more so for Cutler - who, coincidentally, always appears to be high himself.
