Matt Ryan, Boston College Score Twice in the Final 2:11 to Beat Virginia Tech 14-10

Wow. For 55 minutes Virginia Tech's defense dominated Boston College and forced Heisman Trophy candidate Matt Ryan into numerous bad decisions. BC was out of the national title picture and Ryan was out of the Heisman hunt, Chris Fowler and the gang were discussing as much. Then it changed.

Rarely does a 25-for-52 for 285 yards performance with two interceptions make an incredibly positive statement but it was the two perfect touchdown passes (and numerous other great throws on the final) that should have Matt Ryan #1 during his next two visits to Manhattan. Thanks in large part to a failed special teams play by Frank Beamer, that's almost unheard of.

I said during the week that if Boston College were to beat Virginia Tech on the road that I'd fully endorse them as the #1 team. So no matter what happens this weekend (maybe aside from a 55-0 Ohio State beating) they'll be atop my Picking APart the Pollsters.

BC has Florida State, @ Maryland, @ Clemson, and Miami to finish out the season. The Eagles will clearly be favored in each, but we know how hard it is to win every game. You think they'll run the table?

First off, Matt Ryan is an NFL quarterback.  What a throw to win the game.  He showed arm strength, accurracy, ability to buy time in and out of the pocket, perserverence, heart, and leadership.  I think I fell in love with his game last night.

As for BC, I still wouldn't put them #1, assuming Ohio State plays like they should.  I had LSU #2 this past week and might have to move them past LSU, even though last night confirmed to me that LSU is better than BC.  This is what makes voting in polls so hard... what is the proper medium between the play on the feild or record and how good you think the teams are (within reason)?

I was fairly convinced he should be the first QB taken prior to last night ... but showing the ability (mentally) to fight through a bad performance and still comeback showed it all. I'd take #1 if I needed a QB badly. Hmm ... maybe the Bears should start tanking.

BC proved to me that they would lose to a team with a respectable offense and a very good defense. So who is that? OSU, LSU, OU, UF, USC, maybe USF and WVU. Probably a few others. As long as they stay undefeated, there is no reason to drop them because a win is a win, but I still don't see them as a top team in the nation right now.

Agree. I wouldn't pick BC to beat any of the non Big East teams you mentioned. There isn't another ACC team that is complete on both sides of the football which is why they're currently running the table.

you guys act like they almost got beat by a scrub program. They were in a tough game with the #8 ranked school in the nation, at night, on the road, in the pouring rain. Pulling that one out impressed me,

I think it's actually quite the opposite. BC who hasn't beaten anyone this season prior to last night wasn't even considered a national title contender ... now we're all in agreement that they are after beating a very good VT team. The only thing said above was that they have NO offense.

I would like to apologize to VaTech. I had you picked to win. I am profusely sorry that your administration was dumb enough to give Kevin Cosgrove a working audition in the final 5 minutes of the game.

Thankfully the Bears are just good enough right now to keep themselves from getting any of the top 3 QBs.  I'm with you with thinking he's the top QB though.  Every QB is going to have a bad game, but only the top ones can fight through that and pull out a win.

No, there was something else said. They have proven that they would lose to 7 of the top 15 teams in the country because they had trouble with VT. That's what I thought was a little unfair.

To be fair, any team would lose to LSU, Florida, Southern Cal, and Oklahoma if you were to face them in a bowl game. The teams are too talented and the coaches are too good not to come up with a game plan that would pick apart your team in that long of a wait.

Really though. How much did BC show except that when Virginia Tech decided to stop the rush, only then they could score? The onside kick was kicked because it was quite obvious that the BC was getting killed in the trenches and every run was at least going for three of four yards. If the VT receiver on the onside kick didn't some how screw up catching a kick that went right into his chest, pretty sure everyone would be agreeing here. If VT had kept up with their game plan then Ryan would not have had those two throws where he was running in the backfield for what felt like 12 seconds.

Like I said, if they keep winning then they deserve to be in the National Championship game, but they did prove to me to be a top team in the country. The reason why I named Florida, LSU, and the others teams is because I see it as if they played ten times, the records would be 6-4 and 5-5 while if BC played those teams ten times, BC would win thirty percent of the games.

I am going to guess that BC will play 3 national televised games of the four left on their schedule and if they prove something to me in those games, then my opinion will quickly change.

I'm thinking the Dolphins not Bears (they're headed for #1 pick too).  Of course they'd have to actually take their heads out of their backsides and realize that yes, they do need a quarterback from the draft and not another worn out veteran.

They do have a QB from the draft. John Beck out of BYU. Apparently they like him too.

If I were to guess who'll take the first QB, it would be Atlanta.

They proved that playing the the POURING rain, at night, on the road on in one of the toughest stadiums to playing, that they could overcome adversity and win by any means necessary. Can't ask for much more (I know people think LSU won by 40 but it wasn't raining, wasn't at VT. Not saying LSU wouldn't have won that game but it most definitely wouldn't have been by 40)

I understand how much rain plays a factor. People judge Hawaii based off that one game in San Jose and it annoys me because it was also pouring before and during the game and the field was natural grass which led to it being absolutely destroyed. Hawaii's offense is based purely off timing and it's impossible to get any footing on a destroyed, wet, field. Yes, there was no reason to bring Hawaii in here but I will keep backing them up until they lose and then everyone can shove it in my face. Anyway... I don't know if you people understand what I am saying or not. What I am saying is that BC did not justify their ranking (I know it's not their fault everyone ahead lost) under the spotlight and they aren't one of the top tier teams in college football. I don't want to take anything away from that comeback because it was stunning. It's just that last night's game was supposed to be a spotlight of how good this BC team actually is and what was spotlighted was how good Ryan is and the team's weaknesses.

No one is saying they are a USC caliber team but they haven't lost and they get criticized because of their schedule. How can you criticized a team for not losing???

Well I am not criticizing their schedule and it is unfair for BC to be compared to a team like USC. Although USC wouldn't be my first choice for this season. However, you have the ranking of two in the BCS which means they are in the National Championship game. Now I know the BCS is flawed and I am perfectly fine in having two of the top teams play for the National Championship if not the top two, but do you truly think BC is one of the top teams in the nation? This year is confusing because all of the upsets. I would say there are maybe 5 or 6 teams teams that are on a different level and BC is not included on that list.

Add Beck to long distinquished list of quarterbacks since Marino retired: Jay fiedler, Ray Lucas, Brian Griese, A.J. Feeley, Sage rosenfels, Gus Frerotte, Dante culpepper, Joey harrington, trent green and cleo lemon... forgive me for thinking they might have misplaced their enthusiasm with Beck. I know you just don't want to throw a rookie out there, but if ever there was a time to do it, I would think it should be now. makes me think he's not THE gUY.

No, but they deserve there shot if they win out. Now if they go to the NC game and get smoked by like 35 you can say the BCS is a joke but if they are undefeated you can't keep them out of the NC Championship game.

Eh... if Ohio State and BC are undefeated, and LSU has one loss with another win over Florida either Ohio State or BC is going to be left out... which is why we need a playoff.  That way the only debate would be to give BC a 2 or 3 seed.

If BC and Ohio State win out both are going to be in the NC championship. That is one thing about the BCS, it rewards your for wins so LSU won't jump them.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if LSU would jump #2 but its not really worth debating now.  Theres so much time for this all to play out and the way this season is going I'd almost expect Ohio State, Boston College, and LSU to all lose anyway.

I know, that is what I said earlier,
"As long as they stay undefeated, there is no reason to drop them because a win is a win, but I still don't see them as a top team in the nation right now."

Actually I think it is possibly for LSU to jump over who ever is in second if they run the rest of the table. They beat Alabama, win out the rest, and beat a team like Florida in the SEC Championship game. That might be enough to push them in the National Championship game. Not sure I would agree with it if the top two are still undefeated, but I still can see it happening.
