Maurice Cheeks Becomes Detroit Pistons Head Coach
According to Marc Stein of ESPN, Maurice Cheeks has become the newest Detroit Pistons head coach this past Monday. Cheeks was the assistant coach for the Oklahoma City Thunder for the past several years and even has some experience head coaching with the Philadelphia Sixers and Portland Trailblazers. However, after interviewing with Pistons owner, Tom Gores, Cheeks has now replaced Lawrence Frank as the new head coach.
"After spending some time with Maurice, I was very impressed not only with his basketball knowledge but his communication and leadership skills," Gores said. "We are very excited to have someone of his experience and talent help take this franchise into the future."
What makes this hiring even more interesting is that, Phil Jackson was hired by the Pistons as part of their coaching search committee, but the Pistsons chose to go against Jackson’s recommendation of Brian Shaw and opted for Maurice Cheeks instead. Why they would go against the recommendation of the NBA's greatest coach ever is anyone's guess, so the Pistons better hope that going against the Zen Master's wisdom will pay off.
