Mauricio "Shogun" Rua Is The Next In Line To Fight Lyoto Machida For UFC Light Heavyweight Title
Ladies And Gentlemen, The Next Sacrifice To The Dragon Will Be Shogun Rua. Welcome To The Machida Era.
A few years ago, a fight against Chuck Liddell was every 205-lb mixed martial artist's dream, since it would be for the UFC light heavyweight title belt.

In his last few fights, however, it has been a little different. He has been a human punching bag for the likes of Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, Rashad Evans and Mauricio "Shogun" Rua. He was knocked out by all three of them, and has lost 4 of his last 5 fights, Dana White has even said that it's time for Chuck to call it a career.

Somehow, though, a win over Chuck in what looks like it will be his last UFC fight ever is impressive enough to earn Rua a title fight.

I disagree with him getting the title shot here, but with Jackson backing out of a potential title fight with current champion Lyoto Machida, the UFC really doesn't have much of a choice. Forrest Griffin and Anderson Silva could be contenders, but they're fighting at UFC 101 in August.

Rampage was the obvious choice, but he backed out, claiming that he wanted to face Evans as coaches for season 10 of The Ultimate Fighter.

Now, Rua will be the sacrificial lamb for the champ Machida. I hate to pretend that someone can't be beaten, but I would be shocked if we see Machida's undefeated record blemished any time soon. Rua definitely isn't the one to do it.

Which fight are you looking forward to in the 205-lb division? Can anyone beat Machida? Does Rua have a chance? Let's hear your thoughts.

Ha good luck. The odds will probably be -1000 for Machida. Have fun with your 10 cents off a 100 dollar bet.
I'm putting a dollar on Rua, if he wins I'll be a gazillionaire.

Who's going to pay to see this?  Really.  Might as well give me a shot.

Yeah i agree. This is actually one of the worst matchups UFC has had in a long time.

The winner of Rich Franklin/Wanderlai Silva should be next in line.  Or hold off until we get the winner of Griffin/Anderson Silva.

Franklin and W. Silva are going to stay in the Middle-weight class, aren't they?  Now A. Silva and Machida would be awesome.

I saw this might be happening, and vomited in my mouth a couple of times.  As the Comic Book guy would say: Worst. Matchup. Ever.

The only thing this has going for it is the Brazilian vs. Brazilian angle.  In the UFC, anything can happen, but Machida should be a -300 or more betting favorite here (not that I condone that sort of thing).  This also sucks because whoever wins Rampage/Rashad will definitely get the next shot at the title, and Forrest will have to wait until next April or so to have his shot, even though he has only lost to Rashad in his last fight.  Very head scratching moves here, and I don't like it one bit.

I try. But to be honest, your drunken tweets were like a thousand times better than anything I could ever write.

Glad I could be of service :)  I try to help out when I can.

And you told me to take a break to go get smashed, it sounded like a good idea, so there I went, and the rest is documented mini-blog history.

If I was modest, I wouldn't say I told you so. But I'm not. I might actually bet on Machida -300 before it moves to -500 by fight night.

Hey guys!  Maybe Rua will get hurt training and Andy Wang will get the call!

Yes sir, a well-deserved top of the cap to you.  I just thought there was no way it made any sense, and I still don't.  I guess Shogun isn't good friends with any other Brazilians though, because none of the other guys have said they would never fight him.  I personally hope he gets pounded, but just think of how the world would turn upside-down if he were to somehow win...Pure and utter chaos.

It really is just about the timing with this one unfortunately. Hopefully it'll be the first successful LH belt defense in a year, then around March/April they have their pick of Machida vs Jackson/Evans, Silva/Griffin, or Hendo/Bisbing winners or even Franklin.

ya i agree i think franklin or silva or forrest should be ahead of shogun forrest has beat him allready so im not sure what joe silva is thinking here except like the article said just tryin to fill fights since rampage is acting scared and the other obvious choices are allready scheduled to fight soon.... i really think franklin would give him a nice run for his money... and forrest would make a fight out of it also.... and him and silva is a dream match up for me.... i just really want to see silva get his butt kicked by someone

The guy I created on UFC Undisputed 2009 might have a better shot at beating Machida over Shogun.

Damn thats a great game.  Stayed up until 3am playing career mode.  Finally got the welterweight title shot against.....Matt Serra???.   Cant wait to go up in weight and beat Rich Franklin for his middleweight belt.

It is a great game...I just beat Rich Franklin for the middleweight belt (imagine that), and then I turned right around and lost it to Anderson SIlva. I'm kinda hooked...I can't lie.

Definitely agree with you on that.  Stayed up WAY too late last night playing that game too, that career mode is addicting!!

Yep...and found out you cant change weight classes.  Bummer.  Lost my WW title to a BS stoppage (lol) against Matt Hughes.  Got an immediate rematch and K'd him TFO.

Anyway...do you have this for the XBOX?  If so, do you have a Live account?  If so, whats your GT?

Got it for the PS3, so unfortunately I couldn't play you online.  I'm having a hard time learning how to grapple, wrestle, and fight on the ground which is kind of frustrating.  My guy is 10-2 though with 10 KO's.  I see the learning curve being quite long for a game like this, but it is a lot of addictive fun.  Still need to work out the kinks with my fighter, who I have at Middleweight, but that does suck about the inability to change weight classes, especially since they have guys like Bisping, BJ, and a few other guys listed across as many as 3 weight classes.

Rampage has wanted to fight Rashad since he got in the ring after his fight w/ Jardine. He just doesn't like Rashad. Yea, I don't see anyone beating Machida for a while.

Machida is a more rounded and smarter fighter - thanks to years of his training in Karate.

yeah in reguards to the rampage acting scared comment, rampage has been looking to fight rashad for a long time, and ufc gave him the opportunity for a title shot but hed lose his fight with rashad so he didnt accept it
lyoto machida never trained capoeira which is a dance not a fighting style it has fitness and flexibility training similiar to fighting which is why the occasional fighter uses it but no fighter ever uses capoeira techniques in the ring
his three martial arts are shotokan karate, sumo wrestling and brasilian jiu-jitsu, he does throw in elements of muay thai, thai kwon doe and boxing into his fighting style though
