A few years ago, a fight against Chuck Liddell was every 205-lb mixed martial artist's dream, since it would be for the UFC light heavyweight title belt.In his last few fights, however, it has been a little different. He has been a human punching bag for the likes of Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, Rashad Evans and Mauricio "Shogun" Rua. He was knocked out by all three of them, and has lost 4 of his last 5 fights, Dana White has even said that it's time for Chuck to call it a career.
Somehow, though, a win over Chuck in what looks like it will be his last UFC fight ever is impressive enough to earn Rua a title fight.
I disagree with him getting the title shot here, but with Jackson backing out of a potential title fight with current champion Lyoto Machida, the UFC really doesn't have much of a choice. Forrest Griffin and Anderson Silva could be contenders, but they're fighting at UFC 101 in August.
Rampage was the obvious choice, but he backed out, claiming that he wanted to face Evans as coaches for season 10 of The Ultimate Fighter.
Now, Rua will be the sacrificial lamb for the champ Machida. I hate to pretend that someone can't be beaten, but I would be shocked if we see Machida's undefeated record blemished any time soon. Rua definitely isn't the one to do it.
Which fight are you looking forward to in the 205-lb division? Can anyone beat Machida? Does Rua have a chance? Let's hear your thoughts.
