Mavericks edge Hornets for 104-100 win

Guard Eric Gordon capped 23 points along with three rebounds and two assists for the New Orleans Hornets but they still plunged to their third straight loss this week.
The New Orleans Hornets trailed 27-16 at 4:13 of the first quarter but worked their way up to a 58-53 lead by halftime. Eric Gordon made six of 10 shots, mostly from the free throw line where he was 8-9. But after that the momentum of the game again started changing.

Jason Smith made a jumper three minutes into the third quarter, which gave the New Orleans Hornets some energy setting off on a 7-3 run; and then midway through the quarter another jumper that increased margin to63-39. But the Dallas Maverick found back their momentum with a jump shot by Elton Brand followed up to Shawn Marion alley-oop dunk to regain a 72-71 lead with 3:46 remaining in the third quarter.
Eric Gordon and Anthony Davis (knee) watched from the bench in the third quarter, (Davis after scoring 10 points and 11 rebounds) as Elton Brand sparked and Shawn Marion sparked a 16-3 third quarter run, bolstered by Vince Carter’s 3-pointers that led the Dallas Mavericks 79-72 with 1:32 remaining in the quarter. The New Orleans Hornets made an attempt at comeback late in the third quarter but the Dallas Maverick still entered the fourth quarter leading 83-79.
The New Orleans Hornets briefly led 97-94 following a jumper from Jason Smith, but Dirk Nowitzi hindered that progress with a 15-footer on 2:43.
Ryan Anderson sank a 3-pointer that led the New Orleans Hornets 100-96, but Mike James countered that with a 3-pointer at the shot-clock buzzer with 55 seconds on the clock. New Orleans point guard Greivis had a shot at setting up a tie or a lead but he missed a 15-footer with 22 seconds left.
Prior to Vince Carter’s 3-pointer jump shot, shooting guard Eric Gordon had a similar opportunity for the New Orleans Hornets on the 5.8 seconds mark but he lost the ball out of bounds while being closely guarded by Dallas Mavericks guard O.J. Mayo.
Darren Collison, who had 11 points Friday night, closed the scoring a pair of key free throws in the final seconds that determined the Dallas Mavericks’ victory.
