Mavs Chris Kaman still out of season opener, Eddy Curry likely to start
With the team’s big men, starter Dirk Nowitzki still rehabbing from a right knee arthroscopic surgery and backup Chris Kaman out with a strained calf, the Dallas Mavericks desperately needed Eddy Curry to add size at the center against Los Angeles Lakers center Dwight Howard. The Dallas Mavericks plan to use a combination of Shawn Marion and Elton Brand with Eddy Curry in the mix to clock increased minutes. However their performance isn’t by any means at par with Los Angeles Lakers’ Pau Gasol or Steve Nash.
The Dallas Mavericks claimed Eddy Curry off waivers on Thursday, just two days after he was waived by the San Antonio Spurs. Eddy Curry started at center on Friday’s preseason final against the Charlotte Bobcats, playing 25 minutes in the game to average 11 points, seven rebounds and three blocks.
However, the fourth overall pick of the Chicago Bulls in the 2001 drafts, Eddy Curry has been widely thought to be a disappointment in the pros. During the past four seasons, Eddy Curry has only played 24 games. His limitations arose from weight problems and other issues, but Eddy Curry improved his from after signing with the San Antonio Spurs by rigorously taking part in the team training camp.
"I definitely got thrown into the fire. But growing up, this is what you dream about, playing in this league,” stated Eddy Curry. “I've got another opportunity, and I'm going to make the best of it."
While the Dallas Mavericks will try to trim the roster to bring it up op just 15 players by the deadline, the team is also expected to bring in a backup points guard. The Dallas Mavericks have been considering the latter issue even before Jared Cunningham sustained a sprained thumb following Monday’s practice.
The Dallas Mavericks’ 11-time All star Dirk Nowitzki is expected to be sideline for the first two weeks of regular season. Meanwhile Chris Kaman, who signed a $8 million contract with the Dallas Mavericks during the offseason is expected to miss two days.
Despite Eddy Curry short term expected injury recovery period, Dallas Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle still couldn’t determine whether the player should tag around or the team’s two-game road trip. The 30-year-old Eddy Curry never boasts a career average of 13.0 points per game on a 54.5 percent shooting.
Eddy Curry’s offensive capabilities are remarkable but it’s no big secret that he lacks in the defensive abilities usually found with traditional centers. That why the Dallas Mavericks gave Eddy Curry a crash course on the defensive abilities of the center usually relied upon by the team.
"He's learning a lot in a short period of time, on the one hand," stated Rick Carlisle. "On the other hand, he's a big guy who plays with a lot of force in the paint when he gets the ball.
“That's something anybody can use,” added Rick Carlisle who still won’t confirm if Eddy Curry had earned the starting job for Thursday. “His opportunity is going to continue here."
