McLaren sign in Sergio Perez as replacement for Mercedes-bound Lewis Hamilton
Instead of waiting for intimation on Lewis Hamilton’s imminent move to Mercedes, McLaren decided to announce Sauber’s Sergio Perez as the Briton’s replacement for the 2013 season.
The Mexican driver, who has already scored two podium finishes this season, is speculated to be one of the best drivers in Formula One. It will be interesting to see how Sergio Perez handles the transition of driving a Sauber to a McLaren.
McLaren has already confirmed a multi-year contract with Sergio Perez. The 22-year-old driver is “thrilled and delighted” to have become a part of McLaren’s team. An exuberant Sergio Perez told reporters that he was looking forward to follow the legends of McLaren.
“I’m thrilled and delighted to have become a Vodafone McLaren Mercedes driver,” Sergio Perez said. “The McLaren name is one of the greatest in the history of Formula One. For more than 40 years McLaren has been a team that every racing driver has aspired to drive for - I was brought up on the great stories of Ayrton Senna's many world championship triumphs for McLaren - and I'm truly honored that they've chosen me to partner Jenson [Button] from 2013.”
Sergio Perez also thanked Sauber for giving him the opportunity to display his potential. Sergio Perez believes driving for McLaren will be a huge step forward in his career.
“I've spent the 2012 season working very hard to demonstrate my potential, but I've always remained humble and focused,” Sergio Perez continued. “I am, and always will be, extremely grateful to Peter [Sauber] and everybody at the Sauber Formula One team for their belief in me, and for giving me the chance to race in Formula One.
“In fact, they gave me the perfect opportunity to demonstrate what I can do - and I'm now equally grateful to (team principal) Martin [Whitmarsh] and everyone at Vodafone McLaren Mercedes for giving me the chance to take this next very big step in my career.”
Sergio Perez is in only his second year of the Formula One Championship. However, the youngster has impressed everyone with his knack for speed and maturity. Presently, Sergio Perez is ninth in the Drivers’ Standings.
Sergio Perez, who is a member of Ferrari’s Driver Academy, had been tipped to replace Felipe Massa at Ferrari before McLaren signed him in.
