Meet the new Barry Sanders....... Tiki Barber?
by Dodge#9 Dodge#9

During a promotional book tour in Manhattan, Barber said he was “leaning toward” retiring, and that he had “pretty much” made up his mind. Asked what would force him to reconsider, he said, “Nothing.”

A star running back in his prime hanging it up.  I smell Barry Sanders II.

(NY Times) Giants' Barber says he is making his retirement plans

I wouldn't neccessarily compare Tiki to Barry ... Barber has had a good 3 years now. Barry had about 10.

But nonetheless, I think it's a smart move. Barry is enjoying a healthy life after football and Tiki would like to do the same. Have you seen the videos of Jerome Bettis walking after games?

1 year removed from 2,000 ... I still call that his prime. 1491 yards would win the rushing title during a few seasons.

you may recall that Lions team was atrocious with a bad offensive line. Hence the TDs and Avg. That had a lot to do with his retirement.

His average went down 1.8 YPC from his best year to his worst year.  Saying it went down to 4.3 is a little misleading. 4.3 YPC would be a great number for any running back.

I don't see anything wrong with players wanting to  retire early. Maybe they lost the love for the game, maybe they want to get out while they can still walk upright...

Barry was in his prime when he retired and everyone blasts him for it. I don't get it.

Jim Brown also retired in his prime.

how can u quit when u only need one more TD for 100??? f-in Barry Sanders.

if Tiki retires Ill be very upset but I think it is more or less an attempt to motivate his team.

even tho he says he doesnt care about a SB ring I know for a fact he does. Its the only thing Ronde has on him and they have been in competition with one another since they were kids.

Barry never cared about any personal records.

I remember one year, the last game of the year and Dallas had finished their last game and Emmit was only a couple yeards ahead of barry for the rushing title, Fontes asked barry if he wanted one more rush to get the record and Barry declined saying (The backup, don't remember his name offhand) that he's practiced every day like him and he should play the 4th quarter.

He was a class act.
