Memphis touched by an Angel
4/7/08

Take that Roy Williams. Your team was unable to overcome the karmic debt you purchased when you ran up the score on Arkansas. A step too slow, a shot just off, a call that should have gone your way. By the time the gods were satisfied it was 40 to 12. That’s right 40 to 12. And although there were still about 28 minutes left, the game was over. In fact I switched over to see which skinny catty girl might become America’s next top model. Speaking of fashion Roy - what about that necktie? Truly blinding. Perhaps your players couldn’t see after time outs.

Now for tonight. Forget about the match-ups and the bigger Kansas guards containing Derrick Rose and the ability of the Kansas big men to score inside; it means nothing. Memphis will win. Why? Because of Baskerville Holmes, whose remains repose in a small cemetery in Arkansas (do not think it a coincidence). His spirit now plays in Elysian Fields (remember? home of the blessed after death) and he has touched this team and divined its victory. The Tigers by 8.

Now from Tigers to Tiger. It is Masters week. Although Tiger has not played in two weeks do not think him rusty. He and swing coach Hank Haney have been hard at work. The question is not whether he will but by how many (take the poll of the same name here on faniq). The Masters, really, is about controlling your nerves and putting. Nobody is better than Tiger at that.

And finally, staying in the animal kingdom, Mike Mussina pitches tonight for the Yankees. Last time he got 16 outs and gave up 4 runs, to the obvious disbelief of Yankee broadcaster Michael Kay, who kept saying things like “really not that bad”, a term I often used when speaking about my grade point average, which was 2.29. Tonight Moose will get 11 outs and give up 5 runs as his career continues its sad trip down the ladder. Mike - it's time to be a pitching coach.
