I hope it's only the hitting and baserunning advice that rubs off on Jose Reyes. The Mets will begin the season's second half with a dramatic change in their coaching staff, Newsday has learned. Rick Down is out as hitting coach, and Rickey Henderson is in.Whatever you need to do, I guess. I see more potential for distraction than production. And you just know, Ricky Henderson is going to try and parlay this into a comeback with Julio Franco around the clubhouse.
Down said that Mets manager Willie Randolph informed him last night of the decision, and that Henderson would replace him. Two people familiar with the situation confirmed that Henderson, the future Hall of Famer who has never served as a full-time coach, would take over as hitting coach.
When asked whether Randolph offered an explanation, Down -- who came to Flushing with Randolph before the 2005 season -- replied: "Not really. Approach, I guess."
