Blog Photo - Mets sign Daisuke MatsuzakaRemember Daisuke Matsuzaka? The Japanese "phenomenon" who stole a massive chunk of change from the Boston Red Sox in return for one season with a sub-4.40 ERA? He hit free agency last offseason, was signed by the Cleveland Indians, and has been pitching for Triple-A Columbus ever since. He recently asked for his release, and with no use for him in the big leagues, the Indians granted his wish, making Dice-K a free agent.

Well, where else would a horribly disappointing player like Matsuzaka land but the New York Mets? The Mets signed Dice-K on Thursday, just two days after his release. Unlike the Indians, the Mets wouldn't mind having another arm in their rotation, especially with Matt Harvey being on an innings limit. Matsuzaka will reportedly take the mound for the Mets in New York on Friday against the Detroit Tigers.

Matsuzaka had posted a 3.92 ERA with 95 strikeouts through 103.1 innings at the Triple-A level this season, but his recent years suggest that those numbers won't translate to the MLB. Since his career year in 2008, Dice-K has posted a 17-22 record with a 5.53 ERA across 296 innings in the Majors. For what it's worth, he was still striking batters out a solid rate, ringing up 7.7 per nine innings over that span.

During his final season with the Red Sox in 2012, he gave up 42 earned runs in 45.2 innings, writing himself a one way ticket out of Boston.

Don't expect any fantasy relevance out of Dice-K, but he should be interesting to watch in his return to the Majors - especially against Detroit's second ranked offense.
