Miami Dolphins Lose To Ravens 27-9: Should We Have Seen This Coming?
The Miami Dolphins This Season Were Just Smoke And Mirrors
On Sunday, the Dolphins lost to the Ravens at home 27-9 as Chad Pennington threw four interceptions. Should we have seen this coming?

I’ve been saying all along before this game that the Dolphins have been overrated this season.

The 11 games they won were a direct result of catching teams off guard early in the season with their Wildcat offense, gaining momentum, and having one of the easiest schedules down the stretch.

In the nine games they won out of the last ten games they played, they faced eight teams that had a .500 record or below, including the Chiefs, Raiders, Seahawks, and Rams which combined for 13 wins.

Two of their three biggest wins of the season, which came against the Patriots in week three and the Chargers in week four, were a direct result of the Wildcat offense.

If these two match-ups had come later in the season when the Wildcat offense had already been figured out and was not effective, which was proven by the Patriots victory over the Dolphins in week twelve, I’m doubting the Dolphins would have won these two games.

There only other true big win came in Week 17 against a downward Jets team that had lost three of its last four. The truth is that the Dolphins were only tested against an elite defense once (the Ravens) all season and this was not mentioned enough coming into this game.

It shouldn’t have come as a surprise that the Dolphins couldn’t do anything against the Ravens defense, as they lost to the Ravens in the regular season 27-13.

The Dolphins started off the season as a cute story of a team using a unique formation that nobody expected to go anywhere, but ended the season as a team that had streaked through their easy schedule causing people to overrate them.

The Chad Pennington MVP lovefest that has been going on has been a little ridiculous. While Pennington is no doubt a good quarterback, he is more of a system quarterback and game manager than anything else.

It wasn’t just a coincidence that the Jets had an extremely poor record 4-12 last year with Pennington at the helm.

While he can be a great game manager in the right situation, which is evident by his 97.4 quarterback rating this year, he isn’t a quarterback who is going to put up big numbers.

There is a reason he was 12th in the NFL in touchdowns thrown and ninth in passing yards.

However, Pennington has gotten more accolades than he deserves because of his team's surprising record.

The Dolphins remind me of that typical geek in the movies, who surprisingly starts becoming popular, but in reality as we find out in all these movies, he's still that same geek at the end.

Now I know that writing this article after the Dolphins loss seems to be easy, but my point is that we should have seen this coming.

Good call.  But give Sparano & Parcells & Pennington their just due.  Last year they were 1-15, this year they were 11-5.  What were the differences between last year & this year?  I also think that Tom Brady being hurt had a lot to with it.  Not that the Fins didn't earn those 11 wins because they absolutely did but in terms of finishing behind the Pats.  Brady is easily good for 3 or 4 more wins.

I think you make some very valid points......but 11 & 5, and beating out New England & NY (& even Buffalo, who was a 'sleeper' team in the pre-season) for the division title after WINNING ONE GAME LAST YEAR is something that you cannot knock down.

Granted, the NFL is structured for turnarounds like this to happen (draft order, salary caps/taxes, schedule / degree of difficulty, etc), but they were a complete laughing stock last year.     And I bet that no one, even on The Q here, thought they'd win more than 3 or 4 games all year......even with that easy schedule & such.     To win that division is an amazing feat.     I wish I knew the odds they were getting before the season to win the division - I'll bet it was 100-to-1 or higher !!!!

haha this season was neither a fluke nor "smoke and mirrors." Miami played hard every game and in the end came out as AFC East champs over New England (with no Brady so you can never be sure.)

They built a special offensive system that Pennington could be successful in. Miami is a few defensive pieces and offensive player makers from deep threat playoff contenders.

Don't downplay the great season Miami had but instead highlight how good Baltimore was. That defense showed up like they always do. Nobody played good offense on them don't crack on Miami. Parcells turned that team around!!

Ari is dead on.  This season has fluke written all over it just like the Browns and Packers did last year.  They had an extremely easy schedule and Chad Pennington played the best football of his career.  Niether of those two will happen next year.  I think they are probably on the right road to success, but they obviously overachieved this year.  They'll be about 6-10 next year.

I was on record back in August saying they would go 7-9 or 8-8...but I'm with you./////////Ari, good stuff, but remember one thing: they aren't going back to mediocrity next year. Why not? It has nothing to do with Wildcat plays or Chad Pennington. Simply that OL is getting better and better. If Parcells does what I think he will do and sign one deserving defensive free agent and draft defense, they will be right back in the playoffs next year, even with a tougher schedule. They play the NFC South next season.

I'm not trying to downgrade it at all, I think it's pheomenal what happened down there but you have to lok at the reality of the situation.  I mean people really shouldn't be surprised at what happened this weekend.

First off

<-------- Dolphins FAN!

Last year they were 1-15 and could have easily been 8-8 with I believe 7 games decided by less then 3 points. This year they had 7 of their last 9 wins by 7 points or less.  When they lost to the Ravens earlier this year they were hanging until Chad hit Suggs for an INT - TD (downhill from there). Same with this game. The game was tied 3-3 with 3 minutes left in the 2nd and once again Chad hit one of the Ravens defenders. This was (in my opinion) lack of pressure experience against nerves of steel in purple.

I said at the beginning of the season that they would go 9-7 or 8-8 at most. So of course this was a shock but not "smoke and mirrors".  Also the Wild Cat was good in some tough situations down the stretch to get first downs and extra yards. They have youth all over the field. Just so people are aware. On the entire Dolphins team (coaches and staff included) they had 18 people with at least one game of playoff experience. That is nothing. I believe the Ravens have more starters with at least that much experience(exaggeration sort of).

And yes as a Dolphins fan ( a true one). I knew this was coming but I was not about to not cheer them on. They would have needed to play a mistake free game and they didn't. I wish people could just give credit where credit is due. Because most of us on this site couldn't go out there and contribute to one win in the NFL and that's a fact Jack.

Dolphins face tough 2009 schedule

The Dolphins' 2009 schedule will be much more difficult than this year based on opponents' records:

Home
Patriots (11-5)
Jets (9-7)
Bills (7-9)
Texans (8-8)
Colts (12-4)
Bucs (9-7)
Saints (8-8)
Steelers (12-4)

Away
Patriots (11-5)
Jets (9-7)
Bills (7-9)
Titans (13-3)
Jaguars (5-11)
Falcons (11-5)
Panthers (12-4)
Broncos (8-8)

Next year they get their reward for having a good record and an AFC East title. You heard it here first with this schedule they will go 6-10 or 7-9. Plus the Pats and Jets will have a target on the Phins forehead next year.

BTW nicely written article! Even though I dont agree with everything. LOL
