Miami linebacker Joey Porter left everyone dumbfounded this week when he announced that he'd enjoy getting the Dolphins first win today against the New England Patriots. Porter has said a lot of dumb things in his career, but his comments this week might have topped the list.
"I just know he's not a Tom Brady," Porter said. "So if it's not Tom Brady, it shouldn't be that hard...It'll be good to go out there and get our first victory."
Turns out it wasn't very hard after all, and all of us who laughed are the dumb ones. The Dolphins smoked the Patriots today 38-13 this afternoon, in New England no less. Wow.
Backing up his talk, Porter sacked Patriots quarterback Matt Cassel not once, not twice, but three times. Cassel was limited to 19-for-31 passing for 131 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT.
The loss ends New England's 21-game regular season winning streak.
Perhaps most surprising was the efficiency with which Chad Pennington ran the Dolphins offense. You can thank that in large part to running back Ronnie Brown who rushed for 113 yards and four touchdowns. Brown also added a passing touchdown to tight end Anthony Fasano.
Weird things happen every Sunday in the NFL, and this qualifies. It's still too early to jump off the Pats bandwagon, but let's at least stop any New England is just as good talk for now.
