As active as Michael Phelps needs to be during his treturous swimming schedule during the Olympics, it's little surprise he need to digest a lot of calories to maintain energy. [ESPN the Mag has good article on his schedule] What is a surprise, is exactly how much Phelps eats just for breakfast.
In case you missed the 3,000th special on Phelps last night before his races, Bob Costas shared what his usual routine was each morning. For Phelps, breakfast consists of 3 fried-egg sandwiches, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, fried onions, and mayonnaise, an omelette, a bowl of grits, and three slices of french toast with powdered sugar, all washed down with 3 chocolate chip pancakes. Good lord.
A typical day for me is a couple eggs and some fruit, and way too much coffee. So I guess that is the reason I'm not a world-class Olympian.
An average active male should consume roughly 2,000 calories. Although, a quick walk around your neighborhood will probably inform you, most Americans eat way more than that without any excersise. Phelps consumes at least 10,000.
In order to reach 10K, Phelps couples his egg heavy breakfast with pasta and pizza heavy dinners. Sounds like the life.
If you HAD to consume 10,000 calories, what's your preferred route? We know of one way to take care of it. Come to think of it, Phelps might have a future opportunity.
