Michael Phelps faced his biggest scare by far, but managed to hold off Serbia's Milorad Cavic to win gold in the 100M Butterfly final. For the first time in his 7 victories, Phelps failed to set a world record. He did, however, set an Olympic record with a time of 50.58. Gearhead was right when he said that if Phelps loses, it would have been in this race. He beat Cavic by only .01 seconds, in a photo finish. The medal was Phelps' 7th gold in these Olympics, tying Mark Spitz for the most ever by an individual in one year. He will attempt to break the record, as he joins the USA team in the 4X100 medley relay.
The race was so close that FINA, the world's authority in all things swimming, reviewed the finish by video, but were able to confirm that Phelps was indeed victorious.
Fellow American Ian Crocker, who was also expected to give Phelps some competition with Cavic, finished 4th.
