There was very little doubt Michael Phelps would win his third gold medal of the Beijing Games tonight/tomorrow, but the ease with which his accomplished his record feat was impressive. Phelps dominates so regularly, it feels a little odd to use the word impressive.
With his gold medal in the 200 meter freestyle, Phelps ties Mark Spitz, Paavo Nurmi, Larissa Latynina and Carl Lewis with nine career golds. One more, which he will assuredly win, will make him the most decorated Olympian of all-time. A few more and it's almost undisputable that he's the best ever. More on that later from Ryan...
I probably didn't need to mention this, but yes, he won this race in world record fashion. Phelps finished in a time of 1:42:96 and comfortably ahead of the field. Not exactly the same drama as the night before.
3-for-3 for the machine. Still to come: 100 and 200 meter butterfly, 200 meter IM, and the men's 4 x 200 meter freestyle and 4 x 100 meter medley relays.
For those still not into swimming, just remind yourself there will be very few chances to see another athlete of Phelps caliber the rest of your life.
