Not Much Left To Say Other Than 'Greatest Ever'
8/16/08

He did it. 8-for-8. Just like his teammate Brandon Hansen said during the post race interview, this is the greatest sports accomplishment to date. I firmly believe that. More impressive than a Tour de France, more impressive than a string of NBA MVP awards, more impressive than 2,000+ yards in an NFL season.

Michael Phelps is now the greatest Olympian ever after winning his 8th gold medal of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games in the 4 x 100 medley relay.

There are those that say Phelps doesn't qualify for being one of the best athletes ever because he swims. Those people, and this idiot, have never set foot in a pool to do anything other than sip on a cocktail with a little umbrella. There's a good reason no one has ever done this before... it's damn near impossible to sustain the energy over these seven days.

As speechless as Phelps was tonight, there really is nothing much left to say anymore. All the superlatives have been used, and all are befitting.

The thing that impresses me the most about Michael Phelps is just how classy and humble he is.  To me, that makes him the type of athlete that is easy to root for.  He's known from day 1 that everybody was going to be watching him and he's handled himself and represented his country with diginity and class without allowing any of this to go to his head.  Momma Phelps has raised herself not only the greatest Olympic athlete ever but a fine human being as well.

I would have loved to hear Phelps tell Ian Thorpe to kiss his hind end in the post-race interview.  But he's too classy to do that.

So, I'll tell Ian Thorpe to kiss mine, instead.
