Michael Phelps Wins 8th Gold Medal In 4 x 100 Team Medley, Most Golds All-Time In One Olympics
Not Much Left To Say Other Than 'Greatest Ever'

He did it. 8-for-8. Just like his teammate Brandon Hansen said during the post race interview, this is the greatest sports accomplishment to date. I firmly believe that. More impressive than a Tour de France, more impressive than a string of NBA MVP awards, more impressive than 2,000+ yards in an NFL season.

Michael Phelps is now the greatest Olympian ever after winning his 8th gold medal of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games in the 4 x 100 medley relay.

There are those that say Phelps doesn't qualify for being one of the best athletes ever because he swims. Those people, and this idiot, have never set foot in a pool to do anything other than sip on a cocktail with a little umbrella. There's a good reason no one has ever done this before... it's damn near impossible to sustain the energy over these seven days.

As speechless as Phelps was tonight, there really is nothing much left to say anymore. All the superlatives have been used, and all are befitting.

The thing that impresses me the most about Michael Phelps is just how classy and humble he is.  To me, that makes him the type of athlete that is easy to root for.  He's known from day 1 that everybody was going to be watching him and he's handled himself and represented his country with diginity and class without allowing any of this to go to his head.  Momma Phelps has raised herself not only the greatest Olympic athlete ever but a fine human being as well.

I would have loved to hear Phelps tell Ian Thorpe to kiss his hind end in the post-race interview.  But he's too classy to do that.

So, I'll tell Ian Thorpe to kiss mine, instead.

What did Thorpe do exactly? I found this, but is that really enough to get pissed at Thorpe?

So how does this effect Brett Favre?

No, it's not.

It has more to do with the fact that Thorpe has sniped at Phelps rather directly in the past.  I'm not going to dig up exact quotes, but the article references them in as much detail as is needed:

"In the past, Phelps has stuck cuttings of Thorpe's scepticism on his locker at training..."

Thorpe's public persona and personal character are as golden as his trophy case, but I've always found him to be a bit snide.  The quotation at issue here is quite thoughtful, actually.  It's just that when Dan Hicks mentioned his name, I recalled his past critiques and was stoked that he can officially put those in a pipe and smoke them.

I had chills for a good 10-15 minutes after that race.  The only disappointing aspect is knowing that no matter how long I live, I'll never see anything top that.

well i agree with u such a young guy and to do what he did. the press didn't get to him or bolt from jamica. but what made it a perfect end for his games was when he went into the crowd and gave his mom a great big hug and the flowers he got during the medal presention. although i'm from canada i'd have to say look out london because 4 yrs. from now "IRON" MICHAEL PHELPS is coming to see london and get some more gold and set more world records in the pool
