There's no way this story is going to reach the level of the Favre fiasco - thank God - but once again we've got a "Will he return?" story brewing that actually has legs.Yesterday, thanks to Osi Umenyiora's season-ending injury, Michael Strahan released a statement saying he'd come back to the Giants for $8 million.
Even though the Giants are in a tough position, it seemed completely unlikely that the Giants would even try and bring Strahan back. And it seemed even less likely after the Giants said they'd move Mathias Kiwanuka from his linebacker spot to defensive end. So, it's all over, right?
Wrong.
Early this morning the Giants contacted Strahan to talk about a possible return.
Apparently the Giants must not feel real comfortable with Kiwanuka at defensive end. And when you've got a 7-time Pro Bowler that you can pick up at the drop of a hat, that probably makes some sense.
Whatever happens with Strahan, it seems certain that Kiwanuka is going to be a defensive lineman this season, even if Strahan returns.
“We are going to go forward with the players that we have,” coach Tom Coughlin said. “And we are always looking for and searching for people who can help our team. And nothing is going to change with regard to that.”
Even though some veterans don't think Strahan will return, I'm less sure now. Judging by the words Coughlin is using, combined with the fact that the Giants are attempting to get in contact with him, I think this is getting more and more likely.
Even more hilarious is that Brett Favre completely endorses this. Of course he does.
“The guy still looks great, hell of a player,” Favre said at the Jets’ facility in Hempstead, N.Y. “I would have done whatever to try to get him back initially, but now, how could you not want him back? Wouldn’t that be something, he comes back and we start a trend?”
Yes, Brett. I can't wait to see Y.A. Tittle and Joe Namath storm out of retirement, only to get killed on their first snap.
But, in reality, I don't seem the harm in bringing him back. Strahan's been one of the most durable and dependable defensive ends I can remember since I've been watching the game, and his leadership is unquestionable. He'll likely not be at full-game speed until Week 3 or 4, but so what? You won the Super Bowl as a wild card last year.
Considering the Giants have one hell of a conference to get through, and aren't even favored to win it, I think you make this move. It's not like the Giants need to save some money here or anything. And where in the hell are they going to get a guy of Strahan's caliber anyway at this stage in time?
Just bring him back, even if it means we get nothing but Favre and Strahan stories coming out of New York all season.
