Michelle Wie Draws Criticism From Annika Sorenstam and Paula Creamer For Choosing Legends Reno-Tahoe Open
First Things First: Make An LPGA Cut And Sign Your Scorecard
One time golf prodigy Michelle Wie had two options this week: 1) attempt to qualify for the Women's British Open or 2) finish last in a men's event that you've been allowed to participate in thanks to a misguided sponsorship exemption.

Having yet to win an event on the LPGA Tour, Wie and her management (parents) have accepted an invite to the Legends Reno-Tahoe Open. This will already be her eight PGA tour event. She's failed to make the cut in the previously seven.

If decisions like this frustrate me to no end, I can only imagine how her fellow LPGA tour golfer must feel. Annika Sorenstam, Helen Alfredsson and Paula Creamer decided to speak their minds today (emphasis added by me):

"Well, we all have different agendas in life," Sorenstam said. "I had a wonderful experience and, when I look back on my career, I will always think about that. I think it was really a turning point in my career and as a person.

"I really don't know why Michelle continues to do this. We have a major this week and, if you can't qualify for a major, I don't see any reason why you should play with the men."

Alfredsson and I share the same opinion that more of the blame probably falls on her parents. It's disappointing to observe someone so naturally gifted stumble because of those closest to her.
"I feel kind of sad for her," Alfredsson said. "I think she's a very good person. I feel sad for the guidance that she seems to not have in the right direction."
Creamer, one of the bright young golfer on tour who has had far more success than Wie, yet only brings in 1/10th the endorsement dollars is equally confused.
"I don't know why you'd want to pass up playing in a major, especially the British Open here at Sunningdale," Creamer said. "But she goes a different path and that's not the path way that I've taken."
I guess the Wie family is banking that Michelle will miraculously put her game together for a two day stretch, make the cut, and draw all kinds of attention and subsequent revenue. Unfortunately, her game isn't there, not even close, because I doubt she even knows what her objectives are. Frankly, I'm not sure Wie or her parents even care anymore about winning on the LPGA tour.

The writing is already starting to be written on the wall, telling the story of a extraordinarily talented young golfer who quit early.

Until she can prove that she can play and have success on the LPGA tour, she has no right to even be asked to play in a PGA event.  This is turning into a big joke and all Wie is doing now is taking the spot of a golfer who actually deserves to be playing in these PGA events

The author of this "article" doesn't seem to understand Michelle Wie's situation; nor do the three golfers quoted, apparently.  She has only one exemption left allowing her to play in LPGA events this year and has already committed to the Canadian Open in August.  Thus, she's not choosing to play in a men's event over playing in a women's major!  One would think these professionals would be more professional and have their facts together before making such critical statements in public!

Had Ms. Wie not been disqualified for not signing her scorecard ON TIME after the second round of the State Farm tournament (her last competition), she likely would have finished at least in the top five (she would have been second, just one stroke behind the leader going into the final round), which I believe would have automatically qualified her for the British Open as well as put her in position for a full exemption on the LPGA tour next year (top 80 finish on the money list this year).

I know some of you want to hate on Michelle and that always happens when someone gets attention above others, but at least use legitimate facts against her.  Otherwise, it just makes you seem envious and silly.

I believe Michelle Wie might have a few more opportunities in the future to qualify for British Open even if this one doesn't quite work out.

Professional athletes compete for different reasons. Most play for the love of the sport, others for the money and still others for the recognition. Michelle Wie is obviously playing for either one, or both, of the later.

In response to llq's comments, the fact that Michelle only has one exemption remaining does not change the fact that she is attempting to compete in a forum where she has continually proved she can not succeed.  In the State Farm tournament she did not follow the rules therefore she did not finish in the top 5 as you predicted that she would have. The rules were not changed in the last minutes to attempt to penalize her. She did not remain within guidelines and was disqualified for doing so. Had she followed the rules she MAY have finished in a position to qualify for the British Open and full exemption for next year.

As for the attention Michelle is getting, it seems to be viewed as "Here she goes again". As mentioned, Paula Creamer has had more success than Michelle but has not received the attention Michelle has. This doesn't mean that Michelle is better than Paula or that Michelle is liked any better or worse. It only means that another "train wreck" is being reported.

I agree that she cannot be "scored" on what Might have happened.  Good point!  I don't think, however, she is getting near the attention she used to.  In our household we have stopped following ANYTHING she does, simply because it always seems so ridiculous.  We are huge LPGA fans, even my husband, but not Michelle Wie fans

You seem to be infering that I am advocating Ms. Wie should be excused for breaking a professional golf rule (albeit a silly technicality).  In fact, I was merely trying to supply evidence to support my point that instead of choosing to play a men's event instead of qualifying for and playing a women's major, as Annika Sorenstam is quoted as having accused Wie of, she is merely choosing one of the few options actually available to her.

Also the author of this so-called article chose to admonish Wie to "sign her scroecard" and it seems important to point out that she did sign it, just not in time by the letter of the LPGA and USGA rules.  The scorecard ruling has nothing to do with her performance on the golf course which had her in second place poised to challenge for first on the final day.  I'm not giving her points for this, but it is a fact.  She did not cheat to get there and it would have been interesting to read everyone's comments had she not made the scorecard mistake.  Don't you think?

Why is it ridiculous to aspire to compete against the best competition?  Ms. Wie has said all along that is what she wants to do.  How can people fault a young person for thinking they can play with and maybe be the best and then actually setting out to accomplish just that?

Yes, she's struggled thus far and there are a number of contributing factors, however, should you give up on someone because they're struggling?!

I won't.

I think she is getting horrible advice. She should be more worried about keeping her tour card. She need to earn at least 80k in her next LPGA event or she will be relagated to going to Q school. Now that would be a travesty. She has a ton of talent, howver she chooses to play too many PGA events. She needs to learn how to win before setting her sights higher. I have no problems with her trying to compete on the PGA. I do have problems with her skipping a major or quitting after 16 holes so she wont be Dq'd for the season for scoring an 89 or higher. She also knows the rules and has nobody to blame but herself on the scorecard fiasco. Granted that rule should be tweaked, but until it is she needs to abide by it and quit trying to act the victim.

I also truly believe she does the PGA events to please he parents. She really needs to happy with what SHE wants to do.

I did not mean to infer anything. Your points were well stated. Yes, she has the option to choose what events to compete in. That stated, as fans we are open to discuss what we think of those choices. I personally think it resembles someone attempting to solve an alegra equation after being taught addition. The potential is there but experience may be lagging. I respect her choice but also retain my (and your) right to express an opinion.

As for the scorecard fiasco, it could go back to the "if's & but's" arguement. Yes, she may have finished in the top 5 or even won. Then again, it's not beyond Michelle to squander away leads.

Also, I agree the late signing of the card is silly, it was a mistake that she made so she has to pay for it.  And, to go back to your point, it reduced her choices.

;)

Well stated! Not all parental advice is the best advice!

I can see your point and actually I agree with it for the most part. However, she may feel that she will learn how to win quicker and become a better player by playing against a higher level of competition. We may all disagree with her, but I suspect that is her thought process.
