Michelle Wie Draws Criticism From Annika Sorenstam and Paula Creamer For Choosing Legends Reno-Tahoe Open

First Things First: Make An LPGA Cut And Sign Your Scorecard
7/29/08

One time golf prodigy Michelle Wie had two options this week: 1) attempt to qualify for the Women's British Open or 2) finish last in a men's event that you've been allowed to participate in thanks to a misguided sponsorship exemption.

Having yet to win an event on the LPGA Tour, Wie and her management (parents) have accepted an invite to the Legends Reno-Tahoe Open. This will already be her eight PGA tour event. She's failed to make the cut in the previously seven.

If decisions like this frustrate me to no end, I can only imagine how her fellow LPGA tour golfer must feel. Annika Sorenstam, Helen Alfredsson and Paula Creamer decided to speak their minds today (emphasis added by me):

"Well, we all have different agendas in life," Sorenstam said. "I had a wonderful experience and, when I look back on my career, I will always think about that. I think it was really a turning point in my career and as a person.

"I really don't know why Michelle continues to do this. We have a major this week and, if you can't qualify for a major, I don't see any reason why you should play with the men."

Alfredsson and I share the same opinion that more of the blame probably falls on her parents. It's disappointing to observe someone so naturally gifted stumble because of those closest to her.
"I feel kind of sad for her," Alfredsson said. "I think she's a very good person. I feel sad for the guidance that she seems to not have in the right direction."
Creamer, one of the bright young golfer on tour who has had far more success than Wie, yet only brings in 1/10th the endorsement dollars is equally confused.
"I don't know why you'd want to pass up playing in a major, especially the British Open here at Sunningdale," Creamer said. "But she goes a different path and that's not the path way that I've taken."
I guess the Wie family is banking that Michelle will miraculously put her game together for a two day stretch, make the cut, and draw all kinds of attention and subsequent revenue. Unfortunately, her game isn't there, not even close, because I doubt she even knows what her objectives are. Frankly, I'm not sure Wie or her parents even care anymore about winning on the LPGA tour.

The writing is already starting to be written on the wall, telling the story of a extraordinarily talented young golfer who quit early.

Until she can prove that she can play and have success on the LPGA tour, she has no right to even be asked to play in a PGA event.  This is turning into a big joke and all Wie is doing now is taking the spot of a golfer who actually deserves to be playing in these PGA events
