Michelle Wie has been the most hyped golfer in LPGA history. Since her controversial debut, Wie has yet to win a tournament, but she has already competed in several men's tournaments, taken criticism from LPGA legend Annika Sorenstam, and now she's at LPGA Qualifying School, trying to get her tour card.Wie is 2nd after 2 rounds, and will make the first cut, as the top 70 make it into the 3rd round. The next cut will be the top 30, and at -9, Wie is 11 strokes ahead of the 30th place golfer right now. Barring a major collapse, she will be eligible to play in the finals, which will be held December 1-7 in Daytona Beach.
Wie will be paired with current leader Sun-Ju Ahn (-12), and Anna Nordqvist, who is tied for 3rd place with Miki Saiki at -7.
If Wie finishes in the top 20 in the Final Qualifying Tournament at the LPGA International in December, she will get her long-awaited tour card, and will no longer have to rely on sponsor exemptions, which have helped her make over $800,000 in her career thus far. Also, her career will gain some legitimacy, since she really hasn't accomplished anything yet in her career. Some have criticized Wie for her lack of wins. One writer even compared her to Natalie Gulbis, who (until her win at the Evian Masters) was known only for her looks and her boyfriend than her game. The writer, William K. Wolfrum accused Gulbis of selling her body, while Wie sold out her game, by taking advantage of the multitude of advertising offers that had been thrown her way, as well as the (futile) attempts to qualify for men's tournaments.
Wie would like nothing more than to get her tour card, and give herself a chance to compete without worrying about exemptions, or the whispers of those who believe she doesn't belong.
This is her chance, and now we'll see if she can capitalize.
