According to CBS Sports’ Tom Fornelli, five-star RB Derrick Green’s verbal commitment to Michigan on Saturday excited Hoke so much that it brought him to tears.

“He was real excited,” Green said. “I kept him on his toes. But when I told him today, he was just astounded and actually started crying. It was crazy. It was an unbelievable experience.”

The Richmond (VA) prospect has been one of the most sought-after recruits in the nation. Scout.com says he’s the No. 1 running back in the country for the class of 2013, while Yahoo! Sports ranks him as the No. 8 overall player.

He has the attributes to back it up, too: Green finished with 184 carries for 1,285 yards (7.0 ypc) and 20 touchdowns his senior season in high school, and that’s without playing in 17 total quarters (over four games) due to his team’s huge leads.

Green has everything you’d want in a running back. He possesses great athletic ability, speed, power, and outstanding size (6-foot, 220 pounds).

Although there’s still room for improvement – as there is with any incoming freshman – Green’s pledge means the world to the Wolverines.

With Fitzgerald Toussaint’s injury that could linger into the 2013 season and the roster’s overall lack of depth at the position, Green could see some immediate playing time his freshman year.

And for a team that’s trying to attempt to avoid a “rebuilding” year after major departures (including Denard Robinson), this could prove to be a huge difference-maker once fall rolls along.

Green, the 27th member of Hoke’s No. 1 recruiting class, holds offers from 33 major universities, including Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, Ohio State, Oregon, Tennessee, UCLA, USC and Virginia Tech.
