Some people might praise Pau Gasol for his poise and presence of mind late in Game 4 against the Magic, when he was mauled by Mickael Pietrus on a fast break dunk, and did nothing more than get in Pietrus' face a little bit. But if you're really interested in shedding the "soft" label, Pau, you need to do better than that.
I'm usually not one to condone violence in an NBA game, but let's be serious... Pietrus could have broken Pau's back on this play. If I were Pau, there would have been more than words exchanged. If Pau is truly not a soft player, Pietrus needs to be unconscious on the ground after a play like that.
Would Pau have been suspended? Yeah, probably. But Pietrus is likely to get a game on the bench as well. And the series is 3-1. The chances of the Magic coming back are slim to none, with or without Gasol or Pietrus on the floor.
If Pau wants to be respected as a big man in the NBA, there are a few things that need to happen:
1) Stop whining about an opposing player's physicality. Just beat him at his own game.
2) Don't let things like this happen again. Period.
Until then, he's just another soft European big man who would rather shoot a 20-footer than bang for a rebound.
