So far this year, Duke has had a very good season.  They are 14-1, have some good wins, and are ranked second in the nation by the USA Today/ESPN poll.  All in all, Duke doesn't have a whole lot to complain about.  Unless, you're Mike Krzyzewski.  Recently, Coach K made these comments about the lack attention they are receiving:

I don't even think it was mentioned in the newspapers here, that we were No. 2 in the polls. Fact, I know it wasn't mentioned, so I guess nobody really cares. It's interesting, always interesting to me in 29 years here, the subtleties of the local press is funny in some respects.

Coach K also went on to brag about how highly and often Duke has been ranked under his tenure.  Obviously, Coach K is one humble dude.  What Coach K could use, is some perspective.  Maybe then, he would realize why his hum-ho Duke squad is being overshadowed by three other teams in his own conference.

First, Coach K must realize that those pesky North Carolina Tar Heels are undeniably the most talented team in the nation.  They're led by the Tim Tebow of college basketball (minus the titles), Tyler Hansbrough.  He's surround by nothing but All-American recruits including the fast guard in America, Ty Lawson.  While they've failed at their attempt at a perfect season, they are still the clear title favorites.  No matter what North Carolina does this year, they will get deservedly get attention.  Coach K knows that if Duke was in the same position, they would be receiving at least as much fanfare as the Tar Heels have.  The fact that he would ignore this truth is just ignorant and makes him look like the pompous ass that he is.

Secondly, there are two other teams in the ACC who are undefeated, yet are ranked below the Blue Devils.  Wake Forest, who recently beat the Tar Heels, is ranked third and Clemson is ranked ninth.  While Clemson doesn't have any huge wins, they have gone through over half of their schedule without a loss.  That's not easy in basketball, regardless of how easy a schedule would be.  Wake Forest is 14-0 and has the previously stated win over North Carolina, something Duke very well may not accomplish this year.  If Coach K wanted to help any injusticed team, he should have chosen Wake Forest or Clemson, both of whom have been undeservedly ranked below Duke.

What makes Coach K's comments so infuriating is the fact that nobody has benefitted more from the media than Coack K and the Duke Blue Devils.  Mike Krzyzewski is obviously a great basketball coach and has built up a very good program.  However, Duke is still living off of their dominance in the early 90's and quite frankly has fallen off since then.  Duke is still one of the better programs in the nation, but nobody could logically argue they are the best.  Of course, the media will make that argument, which benefits Coach K in recruiting which in turns benefits him on the court.  Coach K can call out the media all he wants, but he's only biting the hand that feeds him.  Of course, he won't regret it, because the media will just pick up his cause. Again.
