Mike Wallace is apparently delusional, saying he wants more money than Larry Fitzgerald
He might stay on the market for a while, if he doesn't drop his demands a little bit.
Right now, teams are already a little scared off by the idea of giving up a 1st round pick to the Steelers as compensation if they sign Wallace. It probably won't help that now he's saying that he wants a bigger contract than Larry Fitzgerald's 8 year, $120M deal.
There are a few problems with this:
1) Wallace isn't Fitzgerald. He's awesome, and I like him a lot. But he's not Fitzgerald. Sorry, Mike.
2) The draft pick. There isn't a team out there who is willing to give up all that money AND the draft pick.
3) The Steelers don't have that much money. Right now, the Steelers are the front runners to sign Wallace. They have the option to match any offer that he gets, and it doesn't look like anyone is lining up to sign Wallace. The Steelers simply don't have the cash to offer him that much, and even if they did, I'm not sure they'd want to do that. It just doesn't seem to fit with the Steelers' philosophy. They've been trying to move some money around to find a way to keep Wallace, but it seems like they'd only be willing to do that if his demands were reasonable.
4) The market is slowing down. A lot of the teams looking for WRs have already finished shopping. If there were a few teams bidding for Wallace's services, it would be different. But that's simply not the case.
If I had to guess, I'd say Wallace ends up back in Pittsburgh on a one year deal. If he can have a monster season, he might be able to get a Fitzgerald-like deal next year, but I'm guessing he'll still have to temper his expectations a little bit.
What do you think... does Mike Wallace deserve a contract similar to (or greater than) Fitzgerald's deal? Or is he just crazy?
