Mike Williams Released By Tennessee Titans

Mike Williams Finally Gets The Ryan Leaf Tag
8/1/08

It's hard for me to believe that former USC receiver Mike Williams just got cut yet again, this time by the Tennessee Titans. That's the third crappy team he's been cut from in three years, never a good sign for a former #10 overall draft pick.

I remember during his two years at USC, although he wasn't the fastest receiver ever, no one could stop him. He caught balls one handed in the end zone with guys blanketing him. He really seemed to be a man among boys, even though he looked about 15.

I wouldn't exactly say I thought Williams would explode on the pro scene. But I thought he had the potential to be a receiver in the mold of Keyshawn and Michael Irvin. A big, but not fast, receiver who would be an extremely dependable target for his quarterback.

But somewhere along the way, something happened. You could perhaps blame it on the fact that Williams tried to leave college early and declared for the 2004 Draft because he assumed Maurice Clarrett would win his early-entry case against the NFL. But that didn't happen. So Williams had to wait for a year to get drafted.

But even then, that doesn't describe him weighing in at nearly 300 pounds when he was orginally signed by the Titans.

Perhaps the worst criticism Williams got after being cut came from his former USC teammate, LenDale White.

"No disrespect to Mike Williams, I love Mike Williams, but he is going to have show people that he is really serious about playing football. Unfortunately, they might be talking about him like Ryan Leaf as one of the worst draft decisions.''

Yikes. It's never good to be in the same sentence as Ryan Leaf. Nor is it good to be called out by a guy who literally ate himself out of the first round of the 2006 Draft.

That's like Keith Richards telling you that you've got a drug problem.

Anyway, I don't know what will happen to Williams, but after these failed stints, it's pretty clear to me we'll never see him on an NFL field again.

And when you combine him with Maurice Clarrett - even though Williams has no legal problems whatsoever - the NFL has to be feeling pretty good about its current age limit. I have a feeling we're not going to see anyone challenge that again for a long, long time.

It's funny that we can sh*t on the NBA for not allowing underage ballers to enter the draft but it's ok in the NFL?
