Mandatory Credit: Andrew Weber-USA TODAY SportsThe Minnesota Vikings have become the second team to pluck away a Cincinnati Bengals coordinator, as they've hired Mike Zimmer as their new head coach.

Zimmer has been the defensive coordinator in Cincinnati since 2008. Before that, he was the DC in Atlanta in 2007, and in Dallas from 2000-2006.

Zimmer will replace Leslie Frazier, who coached 3+ seasons with the Vikings and finished with a 21-32-1 record as a head coach. He had one winning season, and made the playoffs that year (2012). The Vikings lost their only playoff game in the Frazier era.

Under Zimmer, the Vikings hope to make the next step. They'll look to improve their defense, as well as finally find a solid QB option for the future.

Previously, the Washington Redskins hired Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden, so the Bengals will now have to scramble to replace both coordinators immediately after finishing as the 3rd seed in the AFC.

It has been a dry spell in Minnesota since Bud Grant.Playing outside for a coach that took the job, knowing this and knowing the up-hill battle he faces, will only solidify the team. All teams become what the coaches advocate...just like Bud...Its time for Vikings players to get the hard brand of football that all the fans know they need! Great hire,I think, as an Old School fan.I grew up in Faribault Minn. loving the Vikings and Twins. Only regret is that the new stadium isn't open roofed...Loyal Vikings fans can now rejoice and shed the cheese-heads deriding us.GO MINNESOTA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Typo in final line. Sure you meant: Was this a good hire by the Vikings? As a Minnesota fan I can only say "maybe." I mean, who the hell knows? More coaching hires go bust than they do boom. However, I am glad that they didn't go dumpster diving for failed retreads like so many teams often do. Norv Turner (3 HC posts and counting), Wade Phillips (3 and 1 interim), Jim Caldwell is back for a second go-round, as are Ken Whisenhunt and Lovie Smith. Out of all the picked over trash I'd say that Lovie definitely deserved another shot. He did a pretty decent job with some mediocre Bears teams.
