When a player becomes of little use to an organization, he's usually traded away for some inconsequential amount of cash. I'd previously thought that was the ultimate slap in the face... until now. Minor Leaguer John Odom of the Calgary Vipers of the Golden Baseball League was traded for a few good bats, and I don't mean some throw in players. He was literally traded for some baseball bats.
His price: 10 Prairie Sticks Maple Bats, double-dipped black, 34-inch, C243 style.
"They just wanted some bats, good bats -- maple bats. It will be interesting to see what 10 bats gets us," said the general manager of Laredo Broncos, where Odom is headed.Despite all this, Odom remains committed to proving everyone wrong.
"I don't really care," he said Friday. "It'll make a better story if I make it to the big leagues."
At this point, Odom should set his sights on being traded for another human being, even if it's the janitor. Or perhaps he should just take up bowling.
