Since today is all about unwritten baseball rules, here's another one for you. Last night, Mitch Hilligoss, a prospect in the Yankee organization carried a 35-game hitting streak into the game--the second longest streak in the majors ever. After starting 0-for-3, Hilligloss laid a bunt down in the seventh on the first pitch. He reached first without a throw. Does this tarnish the hitting streak in any way? This brings up memories of catcher Ben Davis bunting to break up Curt Schilling's perfect game in 2001. I remember Bob Brenly being really, really mad.
If you care, Hilligoss actually came up again when the game went into extra innings. He grounded out and his team lost 8-7.
I'm so glad there's so little going on in sports that we can debate idiosyncracies and unwritten rules. Sports dead season ... it's fannnn-tastic!
